One of the most sought after, and also the rarest, sources of genealogical information is the early church record. Literally hundreds of churches, once in existence, are no more, Even the location of many of them has been forgotten and can be ascertained only after the most painstaking research. Finding the former site of a church can be important in establishing the area it served, but of little comfort to a genealogist seeking record evidence. True, many of the records found their way to central church archives, but many more perished along with the church either through abandonment by the congregation or, perhaps, destruction of the building and contents by fire. One record that escaped such a fate is for the Church of Christ, in Galesburg - once a thriving community of Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa. In 1917, a ledger book, approximately eight by twelve inches in size, in which this church had recorded fifty-eight years of membership data, was presented to the Iowa Department of History and Archives in Des Moines. Also included in the book is a rare document listing the names of a group of early Jasper County pioneers who met in the log house of Morris Cating in 1859 to become the charter members of the Galesburg Church of Christ. The record has three distinct separate sections in which the members names and information relative to them is contained. The first and second sections are in chronological order, whereas the third section is largely alphabetized. The amount of information varies in each section with the first more specific than the latter two. Sprinkled throughout the record are such expressions as "from the Baptists," or "went back to Methodism." There are explicit entries for some members showing date of death, date of transfer and sometimes a mention of their destination. And of course there are many entries that are pitifully vague showing only "died," or "letter granted," or simply "moved away." Often there is only the name of the member and no other data, but even these entries are important in the context of time and place. Omitted have been references to time of immersion, which in most instances occured only a few days before the date listed under the designation "When Received." Also omitted were the names of the many ministers mentioned. These entries may have been of significant genealogical value but space did not permit their inclusion. Those so desiring may examine the original record at the Historical Library in the Historical. Building in Des Moines, Iowa. The many references to "letter given" or "letter granted" can best be illustrated by the following letter which is affixed to the inside back cover of the church record book. "The Regular Baptist Church called Richhill of Muskingum Co., Ohio sendeth christian salutations to any church of the same faith and order, whereas our beloved Brother William Carnahan, clerk of this church, and Sarah, his wife, having in contemplation a removal to Iowa, they requested letters of dismission and recomendation, we therefore grant them letters of recomendation. Both being members in good standing and in full fellowship with us and we recommend them to you as such and when they are received by you and we receive information of that fact we shall no longer consider them under our watch, care and discipline.
