Obituary

Daniel C. "Dan" Murphy, 86, of Newton died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, at Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to the Izaak Walton League Kitchen Committee or the First Presbyterian Church Bell Choir. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Hazael Coit and Delia (Dillhorn) Murphy, he was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1936 and was a lifelong Newton resident. On Nov. 16, 1946, he married Lela M. Hardenbrook in Killduff. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer until 1974, when he went to work for Newton Manufacturing. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Murphy was a member of Izaak Walton League, VFW Post 1655 and the First Presbyterian Church. For many years, he was an active member of Zoar Church in rural Newton. He enjoyed gardening, working at the Izaak Walton League, selling seed corn for Funks G. Hybrid Seed and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Patrick D. Murphy of Council Bluffs; two daughters, Paula Moore of Newton and Peggy D. (Fred) Sellers of Council Bluffs; four grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Rita) Murphy of Evansville, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Myron, Fred and Orville Murphy; and two sisters, Helen Louise Jensma and Louise Stoddard. ~ The Newton Daily News, Nov. 3, 2005.

Interment: Immediately following the funeral service on Thursday, April 08, 2010 at Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Those left to honor Lela's memory are her son, Patrick (Sheryl) Murphy of Omaha, Nebraksa; 2 daughters, Paula Moore of Newton and Peggy D. (Fred) Sellers of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her 4 grandchildren, Jason (Elizabeth) Moore, Michelle (Ken) Nepple, Rochelle (Chris) Crowder and Craig (Jessica) Sellers; step-granddaughter, Julie (Todd) Knudsen; her 5 great-grandchildren, Ava and Nola Moore, Davis Nepple, and Connor and Carson Crowder; 3 step-great-grandchildren, Nick, Zach, and Trevor; her brother, Dan (Marie) Hardenbrook of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Evan and Meta (Bunse) Hardenbrook; husband, Daniel in 2005; and 6 brothers, Walter, Cleo, Lester "Hap", Edward "Pete", Elvin "Stub", and Paul Hardenbrook.

Lela was a graduate of Newton High School in 1936. She worked as F.L. Maytag's secretary and then for the Draftboard. After she was married she was a homemaker and farmer's wife. Later she worked as a para-pro for the Newton School District and then as a caregiver at Peck Day Care. She retired from Peck.

Lela enjoyed flower gardening.
