Nellie M. Mulhern

Mrs. Bernard (Nellie M.) Mulhern, 93, a resident of Nelson Manor for 15 months and a former resident of Regency Apartments, died Tuesday evening, April 30, at the Nelson Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Reese Chapel.

The Rev. William Calhoun will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon, May 2.

Survivors are her husband, a resident of Nelson Manor; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Mrs. Mulhern was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Jasper County Senior Citizens.

She had taught school and worked at the Maytag Co. prior to her marriage.

The daughter of William J. and Katherine McCunn Leeper, she was born Feb. 24, 1891 in the Sugar Grove community, west of Newton.

She was married Feb. 21, 1924 in her parents' home in Newton.

The Mulherns farmed in the Grinnell area for eight years in the 1940s, lived in Florida for 29 years and moved back to Newton in 1976. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 1, 1985.

MARSHALLTOWN -- Funeral services for Bernard E. Mulhern, 98, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, formerly of 611 E. 3rd St. S., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at the Reese Chapel in Newton.

The Rev William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home after noon today.

He died Wednesday evening at the Iowa Veterans Home of a heart condition.

Survivors are a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nellie, in 1985, a brother and a number of half sisters and half brothers.

Mr. Mulhern, an Army veteran of World War I, was a retired Maytag Co. employee and had farmed in Poweshiek County.

The son of Edward and Irene Felton Mulhern, he was born Aug. 22, 1888 in Iowa County.

He was married to Nellie Leeper Feb. 21, 1924 in Newton. Mr. Mulhern had moved to a farm near Malcom following his retirement from the Maytag Co. and later lived in Florida for 29 years prior to moving to Newton in 1976. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 22, 1987.
