Gearhart, 62, year-old native of Roden, Germany, who died Wednesday, March 8, at his home near Metz of an asthmatic condition and heart complications, were held Friday at Morgan Funeral home. The Rev. F. D. Boldt, pastor of the Newton First Lutheran church officiated and Mrs. Maurice Rodgers, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Rodgers, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson, sang "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," and "Going Down the Valley." Interment was in the Sugar Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were Jay Coffman, Drew Coffman, Herman Bunse, Henry Bunse, Fred Engle and Elmer Lind. Lewis Charles Gearhart was born Jan. 3, 1882, one of a family of four sons and a daughter of the late Lewis and Johanna Gearhart. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers and his first wife, Martha. He is survived by his second wife, Mabel; a brother, Fred, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Baty. ~ Newton Daily News, March, 15 1944. |
Martha (Lucas) Gearhart
Born: 1879 in Illinois1 Funeral Services Conducted For Mrs. Gearhart(Special to The Daily News) METZ -- Funeral services for Mrs. Louis C. Gearhart, 59, were conducted from the Metz church Sunday at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. Daniel Buser, pastor of the Newton Foursquare Gospel church. John Hitchler, Mrs. Roy Baty and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Edwards furnished the music, singing, "Nearer My God to Thee," "In the Garden," and "I've Anchored My Soul in the Haven of Rest." Maxine Emmack played the accompaniment. Burial was made in the Sugar Grove cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers; Pearl Hough, Cleo Hood, Clarence Tratchel, William Bales, William Townsend, and Charles Luscombe. Those attending from a distance were Mrs. Ann Hummel, August Kletting, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Kletting and John Stuart of Colfax, Mrs. John Lynn of Mingo and Mrs. Roy Johnson of Monroe. Mrs. Gearhart died Thursday at the Skiff Memorial hospital as the result of a heart attack. A sufferer of heart trouble, Mrs. Gearhart was recovering from an illness of pneumonia when the attack occurred. She is survived by her husband, who is employed in the Maytag factory of Newton.

Mrs. Gearhart, 63, Life-Time Jasper Resident, DiesMrs. Fern Cora Gearhart, 63, a life-long resident of Jasper county, died at 5:50 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cornie Kleinendorst of Newton. Funeral services have been set tentatively for 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Allan K. Williams, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery. Toland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gearhart is survived by eight daughters, Mrs. Earl Parcell of Chicago; Miss Frances Gearhart and Mrs. Cornie Kleinendorst, both of Newton; Mrs. Harry Reynolds of Longview, Wash; Mrs. Garold Kirkman and Mrs. Loren Craft of Des Moines; Mrs. Louis Stulak of Chicago and Mrs. Donald Townsend of Colfax; a son, Charles Gearhart of Des Moines; and her mother, Mrs. Henry Holdefer of Corydon. Other survivors are four brothers, a sister, 20 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holdefer, she was born Feb. 22, 1892, in Jasper county where she resided all her life.
