Retired Jasper County Farmer, 80, Succumbs
of Heart Attack
John V. Emmack, 80-year-old retired farmer and life-long
resident of Jasper county, died of a heart attack about 10
o'clock this morning at his home, 319 South Sixth avenue
West.
Mr. Emmack suffered a stroke four years ago and since
then had been in failing health. Although his condition had
become more critical in recent weeks his death came
unexpectedly and he had not been confined to his bed. He had
shaved shortly before he was stricken.
Mr. and Mrs. Emmack moved to Newton from their Sherman
township farm 26 years ago and Mr. Emmack retired completely
from supervision of his farm.
Born in Illinois
John Vanatta Emmack was born in Rock Island county, in
Illinois, April 6, 1861, one of a family of three children
born to Edward and Rebecca Emmack. The elder Meeks had moved
to Illinois from Ohio.
The family later moved to Muscatine county in Iowa and on
Feb. 12, 1885, John Emmack married Alice Marsh at Swetland,
Ia., and immediately after the marriage the couple came to
Jasper county and bought a farm northeast of Newton.
Eight Children
Mr. Emmack was a former member, of the Sand Hill Grange
hall and attended Christian church services at the Sand Hill
schoolhouse.
Eight children were born to the couple. One of the
children, a daughter, died in infancy, and one son, Clarence
Emmack, has been missing for 18 years, Clarence enlisted in
the United States navy and was at Mare Island when he wrote
in his last letter home.
Immediately relatives surviving are Mrs. Emmack; a
sister, Mrs. Anna Heifleigh of Newton; six children, Harry
Emmack of Colfax, Mrs. Hugh Parker of Colfax, Mrs. A. J.
Klutz of Newton, Mrs. Philip Sash of Melbourne, Ia., Mrs.
Jack Robbins of Newton and Mrs. Merle Jorgensen of Newton;
18 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral Thursday
Mrs. Jorgensen and her son, Earl, have made their home
with Mrs. Jorgensen's parents.
His parents, a brother, Charles Emmack of Newton, and the
infant daughter preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at the Murdoch funeral home
Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with burial in the Sugar

Mrs. Emmack Dies at 80
Succumbs in Skiff Memorial Hospital
After Long Illness; Rites Pending
Mrs. Alice (Marsh) Emmack, 80, wife of the late John V.
Emmack, died at 9:15 a.m. today in Skiff Memorial hospital
after an extended illness due to a malignant disease.
One of a family of six children of Dudley S. and Melvina
(Davis) Marsh, she was born on Aug. 9, 1964, in Muscatine
county, where she spent her girlhood.
Here in 1885
On Feb. 12, 1885, she became the bride of Mr. Emmack and
soon after the couple came to Jasper county to make their
home on a farm in Sherman township. In 1915 they retired,
leaving their 160-acre farm to make their home just north of
Newton on Highway No. 14. Soon after they purchased a home
at 319 South Sixth avenue West, where they were living at
the time of Mr. Emmack's death in June, 1941.
Mrs. Emmack later lived with her daughters, having been
with Mrs. John Robbins for the last six months. During her
illness Mrs. Emmack had been a patient in a Des Moines
hospital and on Sept. 9, entered the local hospital.
Six Children
Surviving are six children, a son, Harry Emmack of Colfax
and five daughters, Mrs. Hugh Parker of Mingo, Mrs. Adolph
J. Klutz of Altoona, Ia., Mrs. Philip Sash of Melbourne,
Ia., Mrs. John Robbins of Newton and Mrs. Merle Jorgensen of
Tucson, Ariz.
Also surviving are a brother, Arthur Marsh of California;
28 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Grandsons in
the service are Wendell and Lowell Emmack, Maurice Klutz, a
German-held prisoner of war, Robert Parker, Wayne and Dean
Robbins, and Earle Jorgenson, who has received a medical
discharge after oversee duty.
Mrs. Emmack was a member of the Ira Methodist church. All
of the children were present for their parents' golden
wedding anniversary celebration held Feb. 12, 1935, at the
home of Mrs. Adolph J. Klutz and the late Mr. Klutz.
Funeral services are pending work from Mrs. Jorgensen. ~
