John W. Dow, 80, Dies Near Metz

METZ (Special) -- John William Dow, 80, retired farmer, died today at 2 a.m. at the farm home of his brother, James Dow, who lives in the Metz area.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Toland funeral home with burial following in Sugar Grove cemetery.

Besides his brother, the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Birdie Westphall of Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Dow was born in Davis county to Albert and Mary Dow. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 12, 1954.

Dow Funeral to Be Friday Afternoon

Funeral rites for John W. Dow, 80, retired farmer who died Wednesday at the farm home of his brother near Metz, will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Toland funeral home. The Rev. John R. Binkley of First Christian church will officiate, and burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers will be George Dammeier, Eugene Anthony, John Healy, G. E. Edgren, Victor Ross and Louis Klemme. Music will be furnished by Miss Ruth Jackson, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson. ~ The Newton Daily News, May 13, 1954.

Dies Monday

James O. Dow, 85, a resident of Jasper county since 1946, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday at his home at route 4, Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Toland funeral home. The Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland, pastor of the First Christian church, will conduct the services.

Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery near Metz.

Mr. Dow is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Livera Berg of Estherville and Mrs. Don (Helen) Kirkman of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Birdie Westphall of Minneapolis, Minn., and several nieces and nephews including Ernest Dow of Newton.

The son of Albert and Mary Balmer Dow, he was born January 14, 1875 in Davis county, Iowa.

He was married to Minerve Coy, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Dow was a retired farmer. ~ The Newton Daily News, June 28, 1960
