Steven Darling Dies at Hospital,
Funeral Tuesday
Steven E. Darling, 81, resident of the Newton vicinity
for 60 years died Sunday noon at Skiff Memorial hospital
from the complications of old age.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at
Johnson-Murdoch Funeral Home with burial in the Sugar Grove
cemetery. Rev. J. Wesley Pierson, pastor of First
Congregational church, will officiate.
Born Feb. 17, 1871 at Chesterville, Ohio, Mr. Darling
came to Newton in 1891 and spent the rest of his life in
this vicinity with the exception of a short time in Wayne
county. He was a farmer and farm laborer.
On Feb. 21, 1907, he was married to Retta Hickman at
Newton. He was a member of the Knights to Pythias lodge at
Pleasantville, and The Daily News Three-Quarter Century
club.
Mr. Darling is survived by one sister, Mrs. Emma Gotten
of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, several nephews and nieces, including
two in Newton, Mrs. Steve Harrington, Mrs. LeRoy Goeke, who
helped care for him in later years. ~ The Newton Daily News,

Mrs. Darling, Formerly of Metz, Died Today
METZ - Mrs. Steven Darling, 69 year old former resident
of this community, died this morning at her home in
Mitchellville, Ia., following a long illness.
Tentative plans have been made to hold the funeral Sunday
afternoon, April 11, at 2 o'clock from the Murdoch Funeral
home in Newton. Interment will be in the family lot in the
Sugar Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Darling, the last of a family of six children of
Calvin and Sarah Hickman, was born Jan. 1, 1869 [1874], in the Metz
community where she spent the early part of her life.
During her recent illness she had been a patient in a Des
Moines hospital, having recently returned to her home in
Mitchellville.
In addition to her husband, a retired farmer, Mrs.
Darling is survived by a number of nieces including Mrs.
LeRoy Goeke of Newton, and several nephews. ~ Newton Daily
