Obituary: Carl L. Clement

Carl Lind Clement, 78, of Rt. 2, Newton, a resident of the Newton area for approximately 45 years (wrong), died this morning, Aug. 7, at the Jasper County Care Facility, southeast of Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Reese Chapel. The Rev. Garold Quick of the Metz Community Church and the Rev. Harold Den Hartog of Pella will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Thursday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Metz Church or the physical therapy department at the Jasper County Care Facility will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Marvel; two daughters, Caroline (Mrs. Ed) Rasmussen of Grinnell and Janice (Mrs. Jerry) Butler of Newton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Leland "Tag" Clement of Newton; and a sister, Elda (Mrs. John) Rorabaugh of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter.

Mr. Clement, a member of the Metz Community Church, Sugar Grove Grange and Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Association, had played baseball for many years for Metz, and was on the church board for many years.

A farmer and retired Farm Bureau Insurance employee, Mr. Clement was active in Republican politics.

Marvel passed from this life on Saturday evening, January 21, 2017, at Accura Health Care West in Newton.

Marvel M. Clement, 99, was born July 9, 1917, near Newton, the daughter of John and Merle (Anthony) Hitchler. She graduated from Newton Senior High School, and attended Normal Training and taught in area country schools.

On June 22, 1937, Marvel was united in marriage with Carl Lind Clement in rural Newton. Marvel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, and she will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was a member of the Sugar Grove Grange, Metz Community Church, where she taught Sunday School, and was the first Woman Soil Conservation Commissioner in the State of Iowa. She enjoyed her family and feeding her birds.

Marvel is survived by her daughter Caroline (Ed) Rasmussen of Newton; a sister Marjorie Lane of Newton; her five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren: half-brother Robert (Judy) Hitchler; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl Clement; a daughter Janice Butler; a granddaughter Carol Ann Rasmussen; a great-grandson Robert Wade Benson; her sister Marilyn Edgeton and brother George Hitchler.

A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2016, at the Pence – Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with a visitation an hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove (Metz) Cemetery.

Grinnell - Carol Ann Rasmussen, 25, of 202 16th Ave., Grinnell, a former resident of Newton, died Saturday, February 16, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 19 at the Reese Chapel in Newton. The Rev. Harold Den Hartog, pastor of the Metz Community Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. today, Feb 18.

Memorial contributions to a fund in Miss Rasmussen's name will be accepted for Brandon Dale, One Special Child to Another.

Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Rasmussen of Grinnell; two sisters, Mrs. George (Linda) Riggs of Newton and Mrs. Robert (Kathy) Benson of Delta; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clement of Rt. 2 Newton, her paternal grandfather, Vernon Rasmussen of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother. The daughter of Edgar and Caroline Clement Rasmussen, she was born Aug 23, 1959 in Newton. Miss Rasmussen had lived in Newton until her family moved to Montezuma in 1977. They moved to Grinnell in 1984. ~ The Newton Daily News, February 18, 1985.
