A visitation will be held from 4-6 P.M., Thursday, February 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. A short service will be held at the beginning of the visitation. Memorials in Phyllis’ name may be left at the funeral home. Phyllis, the daughter of Alfred and Alice (Hopkins) Harter, was born on February 27, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa. As a child, her family moved to Newton, Iowa. Phyllis was united in marriage with Richard Atwood on February 27, 1957 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. She was a homemaker and for a few years had worked as a telephone operator and in retail at Bang’s Apparel in Newton. Phyllis was a member of the Women of the Moose. Phyllis enjoyed golfing, going on walks, and traveling with her husband during the years he was with Moose International. She also loved being with her family. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Richard of Newton; her children, Cindy (John) Cupples of Newton and Richard W. Atwood of Newton; eight grandchildren, Bob, Mike, Scott, Jennifer, Danny, Christy, Andy, and Amy; her 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sondra Harter of Lakeview, AR; and brother-in-law, Steve (Sharon) Atwood of Baxter. Richard Lee Atwood
Born: October 20, 1935 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa Obituary of Richard AtwoodRichard Lee Atwood, 81, of Newton died on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Skiff Medical Center. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, May 21, at the Moose Lodge. Memorials in Richard’s name may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or at the Moose the day of the service. Richard, the son of Victor Charles and Edith Eldora (Halbloom) Atwood, was born on October 20, 1935 in Newton. Richard served his country in the United States Marine Corp in the Korean War from 1953-1956. On February 27, 1957, Richard was united in marriage to Phyllis Harter in Newton. He worked as the Building and Grounds Superintendent at the Maytag Headquarters for over 27 years, retiring in 1993. Following Phyllis’ death, Richard was married to Nancy Wonders on June 6, 2015 in Newton. Richard was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose since 1973, holding all lodge and association offices. He also served nine years for the International Moose Legion, as council member for six years, Vice-President of 1 year, President for 1 year, and Jr. Past President for 1 year. Richard was also a member of the American Legion Post 111. Those left to honor Richard’s memory are his wife, Nancy Atwood of Newton; children, Cindy (John) Cupples of Newton and Richard Atwood of Newton; his eight grandchildren, Bob, Mike, Scott, Jennifer, Danny, Christy, Andy, and Amy; 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Steve (Sharon) Atwood of Baxter; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Ervin of Baxter. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Phyllis Harter Atwood; son, Daniel Atwood; a son, David Atwood in infancy; and two brothers, Victor Atwood, Jr. and Kenneth Atwood. |
Daniel Atwood
Born: January 28, 1960 in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa ObituaryDaniel L. Atwood, 37, of Newton died Wednesday at Skiff Medical Center. The cause of death is unknown, pending the results of an autopsy. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, with burial in Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton. Mr. Atwood, a lifelong Newton resident, worked for Schroyer Construction. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Newton Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Cindy; two sons, Danny and Andy, and two daughters, Christy and Amy; all at home; his parents, Richard and Phyllis Atwood, of Newton; and a brother, Richard, and a sister, Cindy Cupples, both of Newton.
