Obituary: Alfred E. Harter

Colfax - Alfred E. Harter, 76, of 27 Cherry St., Colfax, died of an apparent heart attack Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Colfax. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. Steven Williams, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to the Moose Heart Endowment Fund will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Alice; a son, Jack of Euless, Tex.; a daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Richard) Atwood of Newton; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Harter of New Jersey and David Harter of Florida; and a sister Evangeline "Toots" Seymour of Florida.

He was receded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marline and Lucien.

Mr. Harter, a member of the Moose Lodge 923, was a self employed mechanic and auto salvager.

The son of Willis and Ada Van Emmerick Harter, he was born Aug. 25, 1911 near Pella. He was married to Alice Hopkins May 5, 1934 in Chariton.

Mr. Harter had resided in Newton for several years and in the Metz area for nearly 17 years prior to moving to Colfax. - Newton Daily News Oct 14, 1987

Obituary: Alice H. Harter

Alice H. Hopkins Harter, 69, of 1105 E. 12th St. S., a longtime resident of Newton, died Thursday evening, April 28, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Steve Williams, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in her name will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, Jack, of Euless, Tex.; a daughter Phyllis (Mrs. Richard) Atwood of Newton; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Hopkins, Sr. of Colfax.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Alfred Harter, Oct. 13, 1987, a brother and sister.

Mrs. Harter, a homemaker, had been a die cast inspector at the Maytag Co. for several years.

The daughter of Ernest Otley and Edith May Snook Hoipkins, she was born Aug. 24, 1918 in Devils Lake, N.D.
