History

"St. Andrews Lutheran Cemetery, also known as Elk Creek Lutheran and German Lutheran, is located in section 9 of Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa.

"It is located at 8400 Highway F62E, across the road from the Lutheran Church west of Sully, Iowa. In 1861 the need for a cemetery arose upon the death of Sophia Hendricks. Margerete Kling and Wilhelm Birkenholz died in 1874 and were laid to rest in this plot. It was used until 1883 when the St. Andrews Church deemed it necessary to purchase land for an established cemetery. On 19 July 1883 they purchased one half acre of ground from Nicholas and Harriett Graffis for the sum of ten dollars. The deed to this property was recorded 26 December 1883 and was made out to the 'Trustees and their successors in the office of the German Burying Ground.'

"The worship services, for many years, were held in the Andreas schoolhouse. The need for a church building was evident and the group purchased one and one half more acres on 1 June 1898, from John and Elizabeth Schnug, for twenty dollars. This property adjoined the original cemetery plot and was recorded 17 September 1898.

"On 30 December 1899 the congregation bought and received a deed to another acre of ground north of the cemetery. This purchase was from Woodbury and Harriet L. Mudgett and cost one hundred dollars.

"In the early years families maintained their own lots. At a meeting the 18th of December 1935 it was decided to provide permanent maintenance of the cemetery by collecting funds from the lot owners and relatives. This money was invested n government bonds and the interest used for the maintenance."
