Rock Creek Cemetery
Rock Creek Township
History
Rock Creek Cemetery is a two and one half acre area located in section 15 Rock Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa. It is also known as Liberty or Baptist Cemetery. It is thought to have been started in 1849, when the first person to be buried there was a 'Forty Niner' who died approximately two miles west of the cemetery while enroute to California with her family for the gold rush. Her name is unknown.
The 19th of January 1855 one Samuel A. Gile and his wife Eliza H. Gile sold for the sum of one dollar the described land in Rock Creek Township to be used for burial ground.
The first grave of a Rock Creek citizen is that of Sally A. M. Lackey, wife of John Lackey, who died 7 March 1856, at the age of 19 years and 3 days.
The cemetery is divided into two sections by a center drive and is recorded by rows running North to South. The cemetery is fenced, has gate posts and a drive. It is well kept under the care of the Rock Creek Township Trustees. There is a large field stone boulder with a bronze plaque giving the history of the cemetery.

Additional History
"Mr. LeRoy Adkins of Searsboro, Iowa told the writer [Asher Leon Young] in July, 1971, that the evergreen trees in this cemetery were brought from the Rocky Mountains by his grandfather, Alvin Adkins, on a return trip from California.
"Many Kentuckians from southeastern Wayne and adjoining counties came to the Rock Creek Township in the latter half of the 1800s. Among them were the: Adkins, Kogers, Parmleys, Phipps, Keetons, Rices, Slagles, Youngs and possibly others. Many of these early settlers and their descendants lie burried in the Rock Creek Cemetery."1
