"Shipp Burial Ground, sometimes called the Gagle Burial Plot, is said to have been located along a fence row, West of the John Deere Store, North of Colfax, North of Interstate 80 on Highway 117, on the west side of the road. The exact location has not been verified.
"The Mingo Centinnial book says: 'Shortly after John Wiley Shipp came to Jasper county in 1848, he purchased 720 acres of land in Section 35 of Poweshiek Township. His son Richard died shortly afterward and was buried in a little grove of trees.'
"The Shipp genealogy by Ralph Shipp says Richar probably did not come to Iowa with his family as he did not appear in the 1850 census, however one of the broken stones appears to bear the name Richard. We are of the opinion that Richard probably did come to Iowa, but had died before the 1850 census was taken.
"Continuing to quote the Mingo Centennial Book, 'John died the 27th of May (tombstone says March) 1853 and was buried near his son. These are the only 'known' persons buried in this plot. The farm later passed into the hands of the Gale family. It is known that some of the Gagle family was buried there, but they may have been moved to another place. Ten to twenty burials are believed to have been there.'
"The cemetery was plowed up, probably in the early 1920's or before, while the farm belonged to the Gagles, and has been farmed since that time.
"Many years later the tombstone of John Shipp was found in the bottom of a horse tank on the farm North of Colfax. The stone was broken, but when the moss was cleaned away revealed the name and dates. Other broken pieces of stone were located piled against a tree.
