Free Methodists --- At the Court House the Free Methodists will hold a Quarterly Meeting on January 25th and 26th. --- Services will be held on Saturday at 2 o’clock p.m. Rev. J. W. DICKS, Pastor. All lovers of an earnest Christianity are cordially invited. Rev. J. TRAVIS, Chairman.

The MATTHEWS Case --- The case of Joseph MATTHEWS, confined in our jail on the charge of killing his wife in May last, has been transferred from this county on a change of venue. The probabilities are that the case will be tried in Washington.

This is not at all unexpected to us. No man who has the genius and progressive spirit of our friend LOUDEN can long continue in a state of single misery. We congratulate both of our young friends on this important step which they have made in the right direction. May their present happiness never be diminished.

Proceedings of Jefferson County Teachers Association
January 4, 1868

Association met pursuant to adjournment, and was called to order by the President at 1½ o’clock P.M.

The regular programme was then considered and disposed of as follows:

1st. Theory and Practice, David HERON; also interesting and pertinent remarks on the same subject by Messrs. HOUD, GLOTFELTY, JONES, DAVIS and others, in which some important points respecting School Government were discussed.

2d. Grammar, W. C. DAVIS; declined conducting the exercise.

3d. Penmanship; remarks were made on this subject by Messrs. JONES, BARTON, DAVIS and others.

Mr. DAVIS read a letter from Prof. PIPER, requesting the action of the association, with regard to the establishment of Normal Schools in this state.

The President appointed Messrs. HOUD, DAVIS, and BARTON, committee to prepare a programme for next meeting.

The subject of Normal Schools was then discussed by several members of the Association.

On motion of W. C. DAVIS the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
<i> Resolved <i/>, that we see and feel the need of institutions for the more thorough training of teachers for our common schools, and we earnestly recommend to the General Assembly of Iowa the importance of immediate action on their part, to the end that we may have at the earliest practicable moment one or more Normal Schools, established upon a good working basis.

On motion of Mr. CREAMER, the following resolution was adopted:
<i>Whereas <i/>, W. W. JUNKIN has offered the columns of the Fairfield LEDGER for the use of the teachers of Jefferson county, be it 
<i> Resolved <i/>, That Prof. AXLINE is hereby appointed to edit the column devoted to the use of the teachers of the county.

Mr. HOUD as chairman of committee on programme, offered the following for the next meeting of the Association:

Essay --- W. B. MURRY; School Government, Association; each teacher will give his theories and experience on this subject. Reading --- C. S. McCLAIN; Mental Arithmetic --- Miss C. JOHNSON. Grammar --- D. HERON. Geography --- J. JONES. ---. Penmanship --- C. GIFT. Discussion to follow each exercise.

On motion Association adjourned to meet over D. ACHESON’s store, on first Saturday in February, 1868, at 9 o’clock A.M.

A New Carrier --- Our little Carrier Boy, Charlie JUNKIN, must give place to a new hand, and this week and for several following, the LEDGER will be carried by our young friend, Jimmie CRAIL. Charlie has carried the LEDGER since he was seven years old, but on Saturday last he was thrown from a horse and received a very severe cut in the hollow back of the knee, and had his knee bruised, which will confine him to the house for several weeks. Jimmie CRAIL will serve our subscribers faithfully but if any should miss the paper they will please call at the office.

Jim CRAWFORD has a splendid stock of groceries, and is selling them rapidly. --- Reason why: He is selling cheap. Ed. ROTH, in the same house, is selling staple goods, notions, &c., with the same rapidity and cheapness.

HOWLETT & Co. have a splendid stock of winter clothing that they are selling remarkably low, even for the present low prices of clothing. Coats, pants, vests, hats, caps, &c., to suit all from the small to the great.

A New Firm. --- A change has taken place in the book store of WELLS & WHITING. Mr. WHITING retires from the concern, and is succeeded by T. F. and D. B. HIGLEY. We wish the new firm abundant sucess [sic]. They have a large and beautiful assortment of books; also stationery, wall paper, &c.

Dav. ACHESON ain’t napping. He is up to the times, and supplied with a fine stock of groceries, and if he ain’t selling cheap and fast, then the people are no judges of prices. Look at his goods, north side Park.

Obituary
W. B. McCOID died in the 21st year of his age, at his father’s residence in Batavia. cut off in the bloom of youth, when his prospects were brightest and his soul swelled proudest with high hopes of a life of usefulness. In 1861, though too young, his heart panted for the battle-fields of his country, and this desire of his soul became so irresistible that at the time the 8th Iowa Cavalry was raised, he enlisted in its ranks, as a member of Co. “B.” He served until in action at Campbellsville, Tenn., in September, 1864, when HOOD was advancing on Nashville, he was wounded through the right elbow, shattering the arm and causing its loss by amputation. On his way home at Lewisville, Ky., gangrene having set in in the wounded arm, he was subjected to the cruelty of hospital treatment by being kept several days without any attention because he refused to have his arm re-amputated at the shoulder, in compliance with a determination of some brutal surgeon, who, afraid to go to the front to practice his art, caught his victims there. Her he lingered long on the confines of the grave, subject to the severest torture in the burnings and outings to heal his gangrened wound.

On his return home he received an appointment as chief messenger in the Agricultural Department at Washington. While there the abscess commenced running that continued to drain away his life, till last Sabbath morning he yielded to its power. His is one of the few lives in which, looking back, we discover no cause of human blame. He was gentle, quiet, studious, patient, forgiving, loving and most sensitively honorable. In his excrutiating sufferings he always made his attendants leave him and attend to the slightest wants of others. And, most blessed and sweetest consolation, <i> he loved God <i/>. He died in faith and confidence, saying, in his last words, “I’m going to Heaven, I want you all to meet me there.” Then closing his own eyes, and lying his own hands over his breast, as if to fold them, he whispered: “Good-bye”.

Although the fair bride has changed her name, we trust that she will ever remain <i> young <i/>, and never fail to gladden the heart of our friend MYERS with the sunshine of perpetual spring. May they never be less happy than they are now, and may their pathway through life be strewn with flowers.
