OR NEW JERUSALEM
by Pauline Lillie
Located
Township 81 Lenox , Range 9, Section 8- 5 miles west of 149, on
Hy. f. 12; Across the road south from the New Jerusalem Church
on the four corner highway.
History
This cemetery and church are an outgrowth of the religious order
that lived and located here. The New Jerusalem or Jasper Society
was the first and only of its kind in Iowa. Located here is one of
the most beautiful of old rural churches, now closed. The families
of this religious order have either moved, and caused its abandon-
ment or are in this cemetery.
The 1881 History mentions it- the first cemetery in Lenox located
in the northwest corner of Section 8. That the first person buried
there was Charles Uthoff in fall of 1851. This cemetery now (1881)
contains about 75 graves. Atlas 1874 p. 13, lists the cemetery on
the C. Uthoff farm, no church shown; 1900 Atlas p. 40- cemetery on
the Charles Uthoff farm, but across the road west of the church &
north is that of the schoolhouse.
The full history of the New Jerusalem Church - Jasper Society was
written up for the Iowa County Historical Society, and sent out in
the Vignette, No. 6 page 20. Contains 4 pages of research by Pauline
Lillie.
The Atlas of 1915 p. 5: This cemetery NE corner Section 8 across into
Section 6, corner church again on Charles Uthoff farm; History 1915
mentions first cemetery; And that the first person burial there was
Charles a son of Casper Uthoff in fall of 1851.
