Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript)
by Pauline Lillie
CHAMPION HILL CEMETERY p.1
History by Pauline Lillie
Located
Section 20, Green 78 Township, Range 9; About 3 miles south of old
town of Holbrook. Located in the south part of the church yard.
History
The 1881 history mentions church and cemetery with about 30 interments
but the ground is not so old - the 1874 Atlas has the church on the
J.P. Moore farm- 1900 Atlas on the Moses Kempf land, and the 1915 Atlas
p. 29, lists a church and cemetery in the center section of 20, on the
A.C. Marine land. The 1915 History Vol. I- mentions a cemetery at the
Methodist Episcopal Church which is small - page 185-. An early insight
into the history may be gained from the legal information.
Legal

or parcel of land. This land to be used for BURIAL, and Religious worship
only.
That said Cynthia Moore hereby relinquished all her right of dower in
and to said premises; Witness October 17th, 1866; Signed by John P. and
Cynthia Moore. Notarized by H.H. McArtor Justice of Peace, October 17,
1866, and recorded February 26th, 1867 by C.V. Gardner, Iowa County Recorder.
Condition
When I was there in 1966, both the cemetery and church were well cared for
Lovely big stones, and the usual small ones. Evidently the first are those
of the Huffman family in 1860, who were buried there, but seems to be few
after the year of 1950.
Remarks
Copied the stones September 6, 1967 by Mrs. Wm. K. Wagner- Mrs. Herman R.
Wennermark, and Mrs. Mable Woods, of Cedar Rapids.
Researched by Pauline Lillie - Ladora.
