Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History 1844-1975 (manuscript)
by Pauline Lillie
MT. ZION CEMETERY p. 1
History -- by Pauline Lillie
Located
Section 26, Dayton 78 Township, Range 12, south and west of Millersburg,
about 8 miles, or west of North English about 12 miles on Hy. 67-North
side of road of four corners: Another cemetery on south side with a closed
Catholic Church.
History
In the 1874 Altas [sic] shows cemetery across road from the Catholic Church
on page 37, on the W.D. Hurd land - 1900 Atlas p. 15 cemetery is located
on M.A. Wagner farm, across the road looking east to the four corner, is
a church and school. The 1915 Atlas p. 35 cemetery listed on F.B. Neff
farm. A church is across the road into Section 25. There also is a Cath-
olic Church and cemetery across the road south (1915)
From an article on Millersburg churches, mentions that the Methodist
Protestant Church was organized in 1858 by Rev. N. Linder. At this time
Millersburg was the headquarters of four churches of this denomination.
These churches and = their membership in 1880 Millersburg -19- Dayton
had 25 members and Mt. Zion 45- and White Pigion 31, with Springdale 49.
An interesting article of Mt. Zion appeared in the North English Record
of December 24, 1970; Written by a descendant who had visited the cem-
etery. She mentioned that her mother never ceased to grieve for her moth-
er and always wondered if anyone cleaned off her mothers grave. For it was
a long way from Iowa to South Louisiana. So it was that Wilma Humphreys-
Newton and taken from her weekly newspaper Calhoun Herold at Hampton, Ark-
ansas her place of residence, now: That she came up to Mt. Zion, visited
the Mt. Zion Methodist Protestant Church where her mother worshipped, and
went to the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Dayton township, found her grave cleaned
to prefection, bordered with shrubs, of white blossoms, and clumps of pink
and white peonies, blue and yellow iris. Loving hands from the neighbor-
hood had kept the cemetery beautiful. The grave she found of the grand-
mother was that of Anna E. (McCombs) himler, wf. of Fred W. Himler who
died January 4, 1880 age 31 years 5 mo. 25 days.
Condition
This an old cemetery with stones dating to 1856 and possibly before. The
same kind of old ones found in other cemeteries, of that period and there
are large up to date, for they continue to bury here. It is kept in cond-
ition necessary for maintenance.
