1895 Hancock County State Census Index

Transcribed by the Hancock County Iowa Genealogical Society

Transcriber's Notes: This index was compiled from the information found on the original census forms which were located in the Hancock County Clerk of Courts office in 1985.

Some of the Hancock County copies were damaged and missing.  To complete the missing data, the copies located in the Iowa State Historical Museum in Des Moines were used.  The information was compared from the copies found in Hancock County to the hand written copies located in Des Moines.  The State Historical Museum copies were used for microfilming and distribution.

It was discovered that the order of some of the names had been changed and some of the other information didn't match.  It was determined that the Des Moines copies had every line on each page filled.  The county copies had many pages with empty lines.  Many times if the family was larger than the number of lines left on the page, the census taker started a new page.  Also one of the census takers listed children and their spouses who were married and not living with the parents, those names were crossed out on the County copies and not listed in the Des Moines copies.

Missing information was completed from the Des Moines copies for the townships of Avery and Boone and the town of Corwith.

This index contains over 11000 names.
