Military - Civil War
Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization of honorably discharged Union veterans of the Civil War. Applicants had to prove they were honorably discharged veterans who served between April, 1861 and April 1865 in the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Revenue Cutter Service (predecessor of the Coast Guard). The GAR was founded on April 6, 1866 and promoted the principles of "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty".
