Charles E. Wherry

Charles E. Wherry, editor of the Churdan Reporter, was born on the 12th of May, 1878, in Cedar township, Greene county, and is a son of M. M. Wherry, of whom mention is made on another page of this work. His boyhood and youth were spent on the home farm, his experiences being such as usually fall to the lot of the farm boy who at an early age is trained to the habits of industry in the work of the fields and meadows. He began his education in the common schools, which he attended until he had mastered the elementary branches of learning, after which he became a student in the high school of Churdan. From early youth he had a taste for the printing trade and newspaper work and since eleven years of age he has been connected more or less with the printing business, to which he now gives his entire time and attention. The Churdan Reporter, of which he is today editor, was established in 1890 by Adrian Cross, who conducted it until July 15, 1899, when it was purchased by Mr. Wherry, who has since been editor and proprietor. The paper is a newsy, eight page journal, published weekly. It has a good circulation which is constantly increasing and also a very desirable advertising patronage. Since coming into possession of the plant Mr. Wherry has added a new press and new type and now has a splendidly equipped oflice, well qualified for turning out first class newspaper and job work. His editorials always awaken the interest of his patrons, for he presents his views in a clear and concise manner and, moreover, through the columns of the Reporter, he advocates every measure which he deems will prove of public benefit.

On the 8th of August, 1905, Mr. Wherry was married to Miss Alice Post, a native of Greene county, her birth having occurred at the family home in Bristol township. She is a daughter of Frank and Margaret (Empay) Post, the former a native of Canada and the latter of the United States. They are now residents of Churdan, Iowa, the father here following the mason’s trade. His family numbers five children, all of whom are yet living, namely: Mrs. Addie Towers. whose home is in Greene county; Mrs. Nellie Towers, living in Baraboo, Wisconsin; James H., who resides in Carroll, Iowa; C. H., who is living in Churdan: and Mrs. Wherry.

In his political views Mr. Wherry is a stalwart republican and while never aggressively partisan is an unfaltering champion of the principles in which he believes. He served as village recorder of Churdan for five years and at -the present writing, in 1907, is postmaster, having been appointed to the office on the 3d of July, 1905, by Theodore Roosevelt. He belongs to the Knights of Pythias fraternity and his wife holds membership in the Presbyterian church. In addition to the building occupied by his newspaper plant he also owns a nice residence in Churdan, which is noted for its warm hearted hospitality, freely accorded to many friends.
