Daniel Howe

Daniel Howe is a native of Ireland, having been born there in 1853. He received his early educational advantages and his practical agricultural training in his native land. It was in 1871 that be accompanied his parents on their emigration to America, going directly to Boston after landing upon our shores. From there they removed to Iowa county, Iowa, and Mr. Howe subsequently took up his abode in Dallas county. For one year he lived in Guthrie county and in 1882 he bought eighty acres on section 22, Willow township, Greene county. He has worked hard upon this farm, has broken the land, built a house, erected a barn forty-six by fifty-four, put up many other buildings, has tiled and fenced his entire place, and has so improved all the land that has come under his supervision that he has been able to lay up an independent fortune. He purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres on section 15, Willow township, adding this to his original purchase. and later became the owner of eighty acres on section 10. Upon these last purchases he has put all the improvements and superintends the farming of every inch of land which he owns. He raises shorthorn cattle, Poland China hogs and draft horses.

It was in the year 1880 that Daniel Howe led to the marriage altar Kate Waters, a resident of Canada. Seven children have graced this union: Henrietta, Joseph, Harry, Mary, Agnes, Paul and Retta.

Mr. Howe was for a number of years a democrat, but has lately become independent in his political sentiments. He holds himself free to support whomever he pleases regardless of party ties, and always votes for the man whom he thinks best qualified to fill the position. For ten years he has been township trustee. The cause of education finds in him a warm friend and while serving as treasurer of the board of education did effective service in its interests. He is an influential citizen and one who believes in making his farm do honor to the township and county in which he lives. He has not only looked to the material benefits of his place, but has set out all the shade and fruit trees, and the neat appearance of his farm indicates his careful individual management and the thorough supervision of its owner.
