Arthur D. Howard
Arthur
D. Howard, a member of the firm of Howard & Howard, which by the
consensus of public opinion is accorded foremost rank at the bar of
Greene county, was born in Jefferson, November 12, 1868, his parents
being Isaac D. and Eliza J. (Kinney) Howard, mention of whom is made on
another page of this work. His boyhood and youth were passed in the
city of Jefferson and his education was obtained in the Jefferson
Academy and high school, completing the full courses in those
institutions. On the 6th of September, 1884, he entered the Capital
City Commercial College at Des Moines and was graduated therefrom in
March, 1885, his being the first diploma ever granted by the school. He
read law with his father and in October, 1889, was admitted to the bar,
this being one month and two days before attaining his majority, and on
the 1st of January, 1890, he entered into partnership with his father.
Later he went to Montana, where he engaged in the practice of law until
1903, when he returned to Jefferson and formed a partnership with his
father and brother, Ralph G. Howard, the business relation being
maintained until the death of the father in 1906. The brothers still
continue under the original firm name of Howard & Howard and the
firm has today the largest law practice in Greene county. In this
profession, where influence or family advantages availeth little or
naught, he has won for himself a notable place as a lawyer of wide
legal learning and has gained very favorable criticism for the careful
and systematic methods which he has followed. He has strong powers of
concentration and application and his retentive mind has often excited
the surprise of his professional colleagues. As an orator he stands
high, especially in the discussion of legal matters before the court,
where his comprehensive knowledge of the law is manifest and his
application of legal principles demonstrates the wide range of his
professional acquirements. The utmost care and precision characterizes
his preparation of a case and has made him one of the most successful
lawyers in this part of Iowa.
On the 18th of June, in 1890, in Jefferson, was celebrated the marriage
of Arthur D. Howard and Maude D. Tew, who was born in Pekin, Illinois,
a daughter of V. and Lyde (Shoup) Tew, residents of Jefferson. Mr. and‘
Mrs. Howard have one daughter, Helena De Vee, who was born April 12,
1897, in Helena, Montana. The family are leaders in social circles of
Jefferson and the attractive hospitality of their beautiful home makes
it a favorite resort with their many friends.
Mr. Howard is a member of the Odd Fellows Society and the Ancient Order
of United Workmen, while his name is also on the membership rolls of
the Modern Woodmen of America. His political allegiance is given to the
republican party but the honors and emoluments of office have no
attraction for him. The practice of law and the management of private
business interests he regards as his real life work and in both he
displays a sound judgment and an ability which have led to gratifying
success.
