A. L. Grow

A. L. Grow, who owns and operates two hundred and forty acres of tillable land on section 28, Washington township, was born in Knox county, Illinois, November 4, 1857, his parents being Leonard and Mary (Lawrence) Grow, the former born in Vermont and the latter near Boston, Massachusetts. They were married in Vermont and shortly afterward went to Illinois, where the father followed farming and stock-raising. In 1869 he located in Washington township, Greene county, Iowa, and was here successfully connected with agricultural pursuits until the time of his death in 1884, his remains being interred in the cemetery at Rippey. The mother was also called to her final rest in the same year, leaving a family of four children: Charles, who is proprietor of a butcher shop at Woodward, Iowa; A. L., of this review; Otis, who is engaged in farming in Oklahoma; and Maria, who makes her home in Oklahoma.

A. L. Grow acquired his education in the districts schools and remained under the parental roof until the death of his father, when he started out in life on his own account as an agriculturist, which occupation he has always followed in Greene county. He now owns and cultivates two hundred and forty acres of excellent farming land on section 28, Washington township, and also has forty acres of timber land in the same township. In addition to general farming, in which he is meeting with gratifying success, he also devotes considerable attention to graded stock, this branch of his business also proving a profitable source of income.

In 1880 Mr. Grow was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Martin, of Junction township, Greene county, and unto their union have been born five children, namely: Thomas, who follows farming near Rippey, Iowa; Irene, the wife of Otis Terrel, an agriculturist of Washington township; Bertha, at home; and Lawrence and Elsie, who are also under the paternal roof.

Mr. Grow is a republican in his political views and has served as school director, the cause of education ever finding in him a stalwart champion and helpful friend. Both he and his wife are members of the United Brethren church, though our subject was formerly connected with the Presbyterian denomination. He has been an elder and is now serving as a trustee in the United Brethren church, doing all in his power to promote its growth and extend its influence. He is numbered among the enterprising and prosperous agriculturists of his community and his success is all the more commendable because it has been honorably gained and worthily used.
