Clarence R. Dreher

Clarence R. Dreher is one of the younger farmers of Kendrick township, recognized, however, as a man of unfaltering industry and sound business judgment. He is living on section 34, and it was upon this farm that his birth occurred on the 14th of December, 1883, his parents being Silas and Alice (Hoy) Dreher. At an early day the parents became residents of DuPage county, Illinois, where they lived until their removal to Greene county, Iowa, at which time they settled on section 34, Kendrick township, Mr. Dreher purchasing one hundred and twenty acres of land that was entirely destitute of improvements, not a furrow having been turned or a building erected on the place. He at once resolutely undertook the arduous task of developing a new farm and as the years went by he turned the sod, planted his crops and in due course of time gathered rich harvests. He continued to engage actively in farming until his death, which occurred August 21, 1885, the community thereby losing one of its valued and representative citizens. His widow has since become the wife of P. A. Smith, and is now living in Scranton. By her first marriage she had three children: Irving A., now a resident of Harlan, Iowa; Clarence R., of this review; and Genevieve, of Scranton.

Clarence R. Dreher has spent his entire life upon the old home farm, which is yet his place of residence, and ever since he was old enough has operated the place for his mother. In 1905 he rented the farm from his mother and is now carrying it on on his own account. The place indicates his careful supervision in its neat and well kept appearance. In addition to the cultivation of the cereals best adapted to soil and climate Mr. Dreher is engaged in stock-raising. He is a lover of fine stock, owns a promising trotting horse and is the secretary of the Scranton Driving Association. He is much interested in speeding and has made some excellent runs on the race course.

On the 12th of July, 1905, Mr. Dreher was married to Miss Othella Hall, a native of this county, born May 6, 1884. Her parents are Obediah and Clara (Yates) Hall, whose sketch is found on another page of this volume. The young couple have a wide circle of friends in the county and the hospitalityof many of the best homes of Kendrick township is freely accorded them. They are greatly esteemed by reason of their genuine worth.
