A little history of Adolph Gamlin: Born September 22, 1878 in Hamburg and lived there during most of his childhood. He briefly lived near St. Joseph, MO about 1891 where his mother died. His father died in 1892 in Hamburg. He eventually moved to Nebraska City, NE where he lived for the remainder of his life. He died Dec. 19, 1969.

He enlisted in the 51st Iowa Volunteer Infantry from June 1898 to Nov. 1899 and was sent to the Philippine Islands during the Spanish American war. In Oct. 1900 he enlisted in the US Army and was served in Company C, of the 9th Infantry. He went to China at the time of the Boxer Rebellion and then went to the Philippine Islands during the Philippine-American War. Company C was sent to the town of Balangiga on Samar Island in 1901. They were attacked there and 48 of the 78 men in the company were killed and 28 were wounded. He suffered several wounds and received a Purple Heart. He was discharged in 1903.
