The name Manti came from an early pioneer settlement of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They lived in the area, for years, during their migration westward.

During the 1800s, the school year consisted of two terms of three months. Manti was a thriving community for 20 years, and the original log school soon became over-crowded.

In 1869, a new wooden-frame school house was erected, and two teachers were needed to teach enrolled students. The first two teachers were, R. W. Briggs and Jennie Talcott, in the new expanded structure.

The old school house was converted into a blacksmith shop where wagons were repaired and horses and oxen shod. Many teachers taught school at Manti. Some of the early names included J.R. Badham, Rosetta Cox, Miss Redfield, Miss Tuller, Thomas Latimer, Joe Wilcox, Mr. Becktal, Mr. Krickenbarger, A. S. Lake and Henry Field’s mother.
