The early pioneer settlement of Manti was founded in 1852, by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It was located southwest of Shenandoah. The Saints lived in the area, for years, during their migration westward.

According to historical records, the first school was a log structure with a puncheon floor built in 1853 on the same spot now occupied by the present school building. A puncheon log was only smooth on one side. Seats were made by splitting a log and putting peg legs under each half. The girls faced the east, and the boys faced the west. The only desk was a tall stump with a smooth top that was used by the teacher. During the 1800s, the school year consisted of two terms of three months. Manti was a thriving community for 20 years, and the original log school soon became over-crowded.

In 1869, a new wooden-frame school house was erected, and two teachers were needed to teach enrolled students. The first two teachers were, R. W. Briggs and Jennie Talcott, in the new expanded structure.

The old school house was converted into a blacksmith shop where wagons were repaired and horses and oxen shod. Many teachers taught school at Manti. Some of the early names included J.R. Badham, Rosetta Cox, Miss Redfield, Miss Tuller, Thomas Latimer, Joe Wilcox, Mr. Becktal, Mr. Krickenbarger, A. S. Lake and Henry Field’s mother.
