King Church and School

1883 Landmark Destroyed by Fire
Source: From Unknown Newspaper clipping; by Mickey Erickson

The people of the Bartlett area were saddened to hear of the loss of the King Church and schoolhouse early Friday morning by fire.

Thomas King built the school in 1883, which was also used as a community building and later used as a church on Sundays.

Many went to school there until the Bartlett Consolidated School opened around 1921-22 in town. Then there was just church and community center left.

The small Church housed both joy and sorrow for the people who passed through its doors, but was loved and cherished by all who attended.

Services were held until the mid-80’s and even though it was no longer used, it was still a historical landmark for the Bartlett area.

It’s very sad to drive by and no longer see it standing there nestled in the hills east of Bartlett.
