Dr. S.T. Mitchell was born on the 29th day of October, 1872, at Sidney, Iowa, and died on the 23rd of May, 1929, in the Nicholas Senn hospital, of Omaha, Nebr. He was the son of S.T. and Jane Mitchell, who were early settlers in Fremont county, Iowa, and for many years lived on a farm south of Sidney.
Dr. Mitchell received the advantages of the public schools and graduated from the high school of Sidney in June, 1888. Subsequently, he attended the dental school of Northwestern University, at Chicago. He completed his course in 1892 and immediately took up the practice of his profession in Hamburg, and continued to practice in Hamburg until June 10, 1929, (*incorrect date) when he suffered a paraletic (sic) stroke from which he never fully recovered. On the 15th day of May, 1929, he was stricken a second time while visiting in Council Bluffs at the home of his brother, W.E. Mitchell, and from which he died on May 23rd, 1929.
Dr. Mitchell and Mary E. Kinney were united in marriage September 26th, 1892, at Hamburg. It was a happy union and was broken only by the death of his wife, which occurred November 20, 1924.
He is survived by one son and two daughters, Samuel Thomas Mitchell and Elsie Mitchell, his wife of Armour, South Dakota; Phebe Mitchell and Catherine Mitchell, both of Hamburg, and two grandsons, Samuel Thomas, the fourth, and John Kinney Mitchell, of Armour, South Dakota. The oldest daughter, Esther Jane, died at the age of nine years, and also an infant daughter unnamed. He leaves surviving him J.S. Kinney, of Hamburg, the father of his deceased wife. He also leaves three brothers and one sister, C.W. Mitchell, of Sidney; R.C. Mitchell, of Brentford, South Dakota; W.E. Mitchell, of Council Bluffs, and Allie Jane Mitchell, of Council Bluffs.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Hamburg, having united with that church in Sidney, in 1885. At the time of his death he was a ruling elder, which office he had held for many years. He was greatly interested in his church work and gave it the very best service possible and died in the faith.
He was a member of the Masonic Order at Hamburg and had been such for many years, and was always prominent in the activities of the society. The deceased for many years made his home in Hamburg and was honored and respected by everyone and did much for the welfare and advancement of his home city. For several years he was a member of the board of education and did much for the advancement of the school system in Hamburg. At the time of his death he was a member of the Hamburg library board, a position he had held for some time. His efforts were one of the leading factors in securing a Carnegie library for Hamburg. He was always interested in public enterprises and his unerring judgment dictated what policy should prevail, and his active and penetrating mind helped to carry these projects into execution. His works will follow him.
His body was brought to Hamburg, where funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. S.R. Overholser, of Woodbine, Iowa, his former pastor. Interment was made at the Sidney cemetery. The Jerusalem Lodge No. 253, F. and A.M., of Hamburg, had charge of the services at the grave.
Those attending the funeral rites from out of town were: W.E. Mitchell, Kate Mitchell, Erskine Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Tinley, all of Council Bluffs; Dr. Charles Kinney, of Clinton, Iowa; Mrs. C.W. Kinney and son, Buck, of Essex; R.C. Mitchell, of Brentford, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Mitchell, of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Ettleman, of Sidney; Mrs. Leslie O. Ross, of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Mitchell, Jr., of Armour, South Dakota and Mr. and Mrs. John Patterson, of Nebraska City. Allie Mitchell, of Council Bluffs, was unable to attend the funeral because of ill health.
