Death of Nicholas Hilger
Nicholas Hilger died at his home in South Hamburg Thursday evening of last week, after a prolonged illness consequent upon his advanced age. Mr. Hilger was born in Luxemburg December 14, 1838,
and died February 5, 1920. at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 24 days. He came to America when about 19 years of age.
Landing at New York he soon boarded a coastwise boat for the Isthmus and crossed to the Pacific and finally landed in California where he spent several years. He drifted back across the
continent and settled near Dubuque.
There he married to Miss Margaret Michaels. To them four children were born, all of whom are living. They are L. J. and Frank Hilger of this place, Mrs. John Ruedy of St. Joseph and
Mrs. Tillie Leach of Oakland, Calif. He leaves also three brothers, John and Harry of David City, Neb., and another brother John of Mazeppa, Minn. His wife preceded him in death by 14 years.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church on Monday morning, conducted by Rev. Father O’Donnell. A nephew, Frank Broule of Dubuque was present at the funeral, also Joe Hilger and wife of Nebraska City and Dan Hilger of Riverton.
