Fremont County, Iowa
Blanchard Cemetery
(Benton Township)
Section 36, Twp. 69, Range 44
The Blanchard Cemetery, is in the southwest corner of Fremont County. It is approximately three miles southwest of Percival, started by Dr. Ira Blanchard. Dr. Ira Blanchard was a physician,
abolitionist, scholoar, and religious leader. He came to Civil Bend, near the Missouri River, via Ohio and an Idian mission in the territory of Kansas. Dr. Blachard's
home happened to be the first stop in the free territory for the Underground Railway.
Originally, two people had died, and were buried a few hundred yards from Dr. Blanchard's Home. In 1864, Dr. Blanchard's beloved wife died. During her funeral service the minister announced that
the burial area wold be designated as a cemetery.
