Hampton, the county seat, was laid out in June, 1856, being first called Benjamin. The idea was to give distinctive honor to Benjamin Franklin by bestowing his full name on town and county. It is very slightly northeast of the exact geographical center of the county.

Sheffield is on the Iowa Central railway in the north central part of the county. It has a population of 688, three banks, newspaper, graded school and three churches.

Chapin is on the Iowa Central railway, seven miles north of Hampton, its banking point. It has a population of 200, two churches good school, etc.

Hansell is on the Chicago, Great Western railway, five miles east of Hampton, its banking point. It has a population of 160, good school and two churches.

Alexander is on the Belmond branch of the Iowa Central railway, eighteen miles northwest of Hampton. It has a population of 300, bank, good school and five churches.

Latimer is on the Belmond branch of the Iowa Central railway, about half way between Hampton and Alexander. It has a population of 500, bank, good school and three churches.

Popejoy is on the C., R.I. & P. Ry in the southwest corner of the county. It has a population of 275, bank, good school, etc.

Burdette is on the C., R.I. & P. Ry in the southwest part of the county. It has a population of 60, two churches and good school.

Geneva is on the Iowa Central railway eight and a half miles southeast of Hampton. It has a population of 300 bank, good school and a church

Faulkner is on the Iowa Central railway in the southeast part of the county. It has a population of 60.

Coulter is a station on the Chicago Great Western railway about six miles west of Hampton. It has a population of 125, bank, church and a number of stores.

Reeve is a country village or crossroads, without postoffice.
