Family History Center

Iowa Territorial and state censuses supplemented the federal censuses which began in 1840 and continued every ten years. The territorial and state censuses were taken in 1836, 1838, 1844, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851, 1852, 1854, 1856, 1859, 1862, 1865, 1867, 1869, 1873, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925. Some are "missing." The Family History Library has the surviving lists. Look for these under the heading Iowa -Census and Iowa [County] census. The 1850 census of Fayette County has been printed in book form and a copy is at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
