Northwestern University,
established in 1851, is located in Evanston, Illinois. It was the
first recognized university in Illinois. The first building opened
on November 5, 1855. Female students were first admitted in 1869 and
the first female student graduated in 1874. Chicago Medical College
and Northwestern became affiliated in 1870 and the Evanston College
for Ladies merged with Northwestern in 1873. Northwestern University
now has branch campuses in Chicago and other Illinois cities.
