Northwestern University, established in 1851, is located in Evanston, Illinois. It was the first recognized university in Illinois. The first building opened on November 5, 1855. Female students were first admitted in 1869 and the first female student graduated in 1874. Chicago Medical College and Northwestern became affiliated in 1870 and the Evanston College for Ladies merged with Northwestern in 1873. Northwestern University now has branch campuses in Chicago and other Illinois cities.

Pastor at Normal Park, Chicago, 1890-93; of Fowler Church, Chicago, 1893-94; at Wilmette, Ill., 1894-99; Grace church, Portland, Ore., 1899-1900; St. Luke’s church, Dubuque, Iowa, 1900-current. Member of Upper Iowa Conference. Married Julia Molitor, at Detroit, Mich., 14 June 1893. Children – Helen, born 20 July 1895, Edward William, born 31 Oct. 1897. Albert Dana Gillespie

Graduate #163, B.S. C.E., 1875.
Born 11 April 1853, at Dubuque, Iowa. Prepared at Northwestern University Academy. After teaching one year took a graduate course of two terms in architecture in Cornell University. With the U.S. Engineer Corps on the Lake Survey, 1874, and again in the improvement of the Mississippi river, 1879-81. Architect in New York City in 1886, and in Chicago, 1887----. Residence, unknown (1903).

 

Leo J. Meier

Received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1962, and was a graduate of Northwestern Trust School, Evanston, IL (conducted by the American Bankers Association at Northwestern University)
Born 9 May 1937, in Eden, WI. Married Sandra S. Mellor, 12 Oct 1963. Employed by the American Trust & Savings Bank in Dubuque from 1966-2002. Died in Dubuque on 8 Aug 2003.

 

Harlan G. Melchior, Jr.

Earned graduate degrees in banking from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University, Chicago.
Born 23 Apr 1912, in Dubuque. He graduated from Columbia Academy and College (now Loras College) in 1934. Married Virginia Donovan 28 Jan 1942. Vice president of the trust department at American Trust and Savings Bank, Dubuque, until his retirement in 1977. Died 21 Sep 2003.

 

Harriet Leland Morse (Barnes)

Born 16 June 1874, at Kent’s Hill, Me. Teacher of Latin and Greek in Epworth Seminary, Epworth, Ia., 1897-1899. Married Rev. Francis George Barnes, 18 July 1899, at Evanston, Ill. Child – Leland Spencer, born 23 Jan. 1901. Residence (1903), Onarga, Ill. Sister of Northwestern graduate #587, Isabel Russell Morse, b. 22 May 1866.

 

Marion Murdoch / Murdock

Born in Garnavillo, 9 October, 1849. Attended Northwestern Ladies' College, Evanston, IL and graduated from the Boston University School of Oratory. Spent several years in teaching in Dubuque, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb.

 

Floyd G. Rundle

Master of music education degree at Northwestern University
Born 2 Dec. 1917 in La Crosse, WI and grew up in Dubuque. Employed as coordinator of music in the Dubuque public schools until his retirement in 1983. Died 13 Nov 2008.

 

George M. Schroeder, DDS

Graduate of Northwestern University Dental School
Born 26 Dec 1874, at Holy Cross. 24 Nov 1921, married Josephine Hemmi. Practiced dentistry in Casade and later in Dubuque until his retirement. Died Jan 1957 in Dubuque.

 

Melville Cox Spaulding

Graduate #11, A.B. 1860, Hinman.
Registered 1855, from Dubuque, Iowa. Born 3 Jan. 1836, at Boston, Mass. Prepared at Alexander college, Iowa. Admitted to the bar just before the war, but never practiced law. Served in Co. A, 46th Iowa Infantry, from May 1865 to close of war. Literary work and real estate business after the war until 1885; since then practicing and teaching Christian Science. Author of “The Eighteen American Administrations,” 1871, and of “Statistics of the United States.” Married Elvira Wetherbee of Rockingham, Vt., 18 Dec. 1866. Residence (1903), 406 Oak St., Columbus., Ohio.

 

Parker Stewart Webster
