DEATH CLAIMS ROBERT QUIRK
Former Citizen and Mayor Died of Injuries Received in Chicago Rail Accident.

Friends and relatives here were greatly depressed Monday night [22 Sep1913] when the news reached Cascade that Robert Quirk, of Waterloo, former well-known citizen and ex-mayor of this city, was badly if not fatally injured by falling beneath the wheels of a Chicago Great Western cattle train at 40th street and Laurel avenue in Chicago.

Last night [24 Sep 1913] the sad news reached Cascade that Mr. Quirk succumbed to the injuries and passed away during Wednesday [24 Sep1913] at 12:30 p.m. From the meager information that has reached here it is gleaned that Mr. Quirk's left leg was severed midway between the ankle and knee and that he was injured internally. In a letter to S. T. Kean of this city J. J. Farrelly the well known commission man, assisted in having the injured man removed to the Engelwood hospital.
Amputation of the leg higher up was found necessary.

Mrs. Quirk of Waterloo and son William hurried to the bedside of the injured husband and father. On Tuesday [23 Sep 1913] daughters of Mr. Quirk informed their cousin Henry Seery that good reports of their father's condition were received from Chicago and there was a feeling that Mr. Quirk would recover from the shock but unfortunately the improvement was only temporary. The accident was too severe in nature for Mr. Quirk's age.

Mr. Quirk came to Cascade from Delaware county about twenty-five years ago [abt. 1888] and engaged in stock buying, first alone, but later formed a co-partnership under the name of Kean Bros. & Quirk, buyers who were known far and wide among stock raisers and feeders. During his residence he was numbered among the strong and valuable citizens.

He served on the city council, and in March, 1899, was elected mayor of Cascade. A year or so later [abt. 1900] he removed his family to Dubuque and continued his stock buying business, and built a handsome residence on Alta Vista Street. Five or six years ago [1907/1908] he sold his residence at Dubuque and removed to Waterloo, where he still continued live stock buying and which line he followed up to the time the fatal accident occurred.

Mr. Quirk was married 37 years ago [26 Jan 1876] when still a resident of Delaware county, to Miss Mary Seery, daughter of the late John Seery of Washington township, Jones county, who with three children survive, him: Miss Etta, William and Marcella. He is also survived by his brother Rev. Father Quirk, of Clinton, and three sisters.

Mr. Quirk was a graduate of the Monticello [Jones County] high school, and in his younger days taught in the public schools of Delaware and Jones counties. He was a man of forcible character, genial spirit, and ruggedly honest. His death, and especially the untimely manner of it, is sincerely and deeply mourned here in his old home and wherever he was known.

The funeral will be held at St. Patrick's church in Dubuque tomorrow (Friday) morning [26 Sep 1913], and burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

William, Loretta and Marcella inherited a farm hear Monticello, Iowa. This land was an original land grant to Edward (Edmund) Quirk from President Polk in 1848. The land was later sold to Eric Wahl.

William and Sadie Quirk lived at 1398 Vista Street, Dubuque, Iowa from the early 1920s until their deaths. Mary Seery Quirk lived next door.

'William E. Quirk, Sr. inherited the land in Colony, Kansas. It was originally 40 acres purchased as an investment because it was suspected that oil could be found. When Bob [son, Robert J.] and Fron came to KC someone contacted William E. Senior about drilling there, and he referred them to Bob. No oil but Bob and his dad decided to start raising cattle. After William's death in 1955, Bob added more land until there was approximately 2000 acres fenced with cattle. After Bob's death W. E. (Bill) [grandson of Wm. E. and son of Robert J.] managed it until it was sold in 1998.'

'Casey [Fronalee Eaker Quirk] was telling a story the other night about William E. Senior - he was here visiting, went out for a drive, he was using a small road to cross over Brush Creek, and he got his car stuck in some high water, and police and fireman had to rescue him. There was a sign where he crossed that said 'Don't cross if the water is above the white line', and when they asked him why he went ahead and crossed, he said 'I didn't see any white line', which of course was actually buried under the water. The picture was on the front page of the paper!

Her husband William E., died in May, 1955. She was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and was a member of the Nativity Rosary Society.

Surviving are a son, Robert J. of Shawnee Mission, and three grandchildren.

He had a man [,Ed] (and later. . .[Ed's]. . .son) running the ranch for him during the weekdays, but he rarely missed going on a Saturday - (Sundays were always reserved for golf).  I remember getting up early occasionally on a Saturday morning and driving down there with him. We'd go out in Ed's truck and drive around in the fields and look at the cattle. We'd sit in the middle of all the cattle and talk and talk about the ranch and the trials and tribulations Ed was faced with during the week. My dad was always so relaxed there.  My brother Bill continued to run the ranch after my dad's death, and we only sold the land a few years ago. My brother just didn't have the time and cattle prices were so low then that it was a good time to get out of the business.'

'My dad died of a brain tumor. He was originally diagnosed by his doctor as being depressed. He had retired from his job, and I remember the doctor thinking that my dad was having a tough time dealing with retirement, when in reality he had developed this tumor.  By the time he was diagnosed and he went through an operation to remove the tumor, it was December of that year, and he died the following February, so it was all rather sudden and fast - of course it didn't seem all that fast at the time. My dad was a great guy....I still think of him often and miss him terribly.'

Services for Robert J. Quirk, 64, of Mission Hills, [Johnson County,] Kan., formerly of Dubuque, were held at10 a.m. Tuesday [23 Feb 1982] at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Prairie Village, [Johnson County,] Kan. Burial was in Mount Mariah Cemetery, Kansas City, [Clay County,] Mo.

Mr. Quirk died Sunday morning [21 Feb 1982] in a Kansas City (Mo.) hospital. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, and the University of Iowa Law School in Iowa City. He was an FBI agent during World War II, and upon completion of his FBI assignment and a brief service in the practice of law in Dubuque, he was called for special military service with the Army. Following his service duty, he was employed with the Atomic Energy Commission, and Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, Mo., where he served as plant manager for 13 years prior to his retirement two years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Fronalee; two sons, William and Jim, and a daughter Katie, all of Mission Hills[, Johnson County, Kansas].

Bob married^1,9 Fronalee Eaker "Casey"^1,9 on 16 May 1947 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
