WHO THEY WERE.....

     John Cammack- farmer and stock raiser, section 21, postoffice Bloomfield; was born in Park County, Indiana, Oct 24, 1825, where he grew to manhood and acquired his education, and helped his father on the farm. In 1849, he came to this county and intended to settle here, but returning home, he caught the gold fever, and started for California, by the overland route, being 5 months on the way; he mined 1 year and then returned home by way of the Panama and New Orleans. He became a resident of Davis County, April 7, 1852, and located where he now lives. His farm consists of 282 acres, well improved, with a good orchard, well watered by a living spring. His farm is fenced in lots for stock management. He feeds, and puts on the market annually, 3 car loads of stock. He also owns 32 acres of good blue grass woodland pasture. He was married April 1, 1844, to Miss Catharine Hawkins, a native of Indiana. She lived but 3 years after their marriage, dying January 1, 1847, leaving 1 child, now deceased. He was married again, March 20, 1848, to Miss Nancy High, also a native of Indiana. She lived 1 year after their marriage, dying, March 9, 1849, leaving 1 child, Tilman A., now a resident of Kansas. He married again March 1, 1853, to Miss Albina French, a native of Indiana. [Marriage Records 27 Feb 1853] This marriage proved unhappy, and they separated 4 months after, and obtained a divorce. 1 child was the result of this union, born after the separation, of whom Mr C granted her the custody. He was married the 4th time, April 29, 1854, [Marriage Records 30 Apr 1854] to his present wife Miss Nancy Hale, a native of Illinois. They have 2 children; Anna, wife of Miles Shown; and Francis [Frank] M., of this county. He is one of the most highly respected citizens of the county.1   On Monday April 30th, 1894, at their home in this city occured one of the most enjoyable society events of the season. Vis: The 40th marriage anniversary of Mr John Cammack and Miss Nancy Hale who were united in marriage in Davis county, Iowa, April 30th, 1854. There were many invited guests present and others were kept away, some by the rain and some because of sickness. The following were among those present: Mr Wilbert Farnes, his mother, wife and 2 children all of Page Co., IA. Mrs Mary J Black and granddaughter, Miss May Carroll, of White Elm, Davis County, Iowa. Mr Miles Showen, his wife, son and daughter. Mr Frank Cammack, his wife and son. Mr Add Munn and wife and Aunt Jane Hale, Mr Wm Dupree, his wife and children. Mrs L G Turner and wife, and L C Carroll and wife. Many of the guests came bearing presents, some very beautiful beyond description, and others of the more useful order, all of which were received by this aged and esteemed couple who showed their high appreciation by many expressions of gratitude following the presentation remarks by L C Carroll. After being entertained by a very sumptuous dinner and considerable time spent in social visiting the company departed severally to their homes all hoping that this worthy pair who have walked life's path together for 40 years may be spared to enjoy many more years with each other and with their many friends.Notice, The Davis County Republican, Thursday, April 18, 1895, John Cammack died at his home in the SW part of this city.  Notice, The Davis County Republican, August 1, 1895, Proof of Will. 1860 census, records John and Nancy, son, Lilman[Tilman], age 11, Peggy, age 5, and Francis [Frank] age 2. 1870 census, shows, John and Nancy, daughter Peggy and son Francis. Lilman[Tilman] moved to Kansas between 1860 & 1870. Also, Alexander Parker, age 44, and apparently his children, Louis and Ella, age 1, all born in Indiana. 1880 census shows John, Nancy, and son Frank M.,  nephews James Parker, age 16, and William Parker, age 14 and a niece Ella in the household. 

  • Emma Crawford Cammack-Wife of Frank M, married Aug 11, 1880, died March 3, 1903 at her home near Oskaloosa, Kansas. Son Earl preceded her in death. Son Glen, age12 survives along with her husband, 2 brothers, and a sister. The remains were laid beside her son Earl. -Obituary

     Gregory Cammack- 1940 WPA Cemetery records say he was in the Civil War, Co E 3rd IA Calv. 1870 Census, Bloomfield Township, has Gregory at the age of 30, a railroad worker, making his birth Abt. 1840, born in Indiana. 14 years younger than John Cammack, see above, could be a brother, or cousin? Wife Mary listed at the age of 25, also born Indiana, a daughter, Elmira, 8, b. Iowa, also a son, Edward age 6, born Iowa. No stone 2003

     Fannie Chibine- daughter of H Clubine, commited suicide by use of strychnine lived 3 miles west of town of the Cammack place.

  • Clarissa Brouhard - daughter of John, sister to Jerome, and Corydon.

  • Jerome C Brouhard- Son of John, brother to Corydon. Jerome C Brouhard, a long time resident of Davis county died at his home 2 1/2 miles west of town. He served as a member of the Davis County Fair Association for 21 years. He was a member of the Davis County Board of Supervisors for 6 years, ending his last term in 1913. Mr Brouhard was married to Lucinda Ware, April 1, 1877, at the James Ware home. 6 children were born to them, Ella, dying in infancy. The 5 children surviving are Ada, Agnes, Anna, Harley and Lulu.

  • Martha Wade Brouhard- wife of John Broughard. 1870 census shows John and James Wade, born Iowa, ages 19 and 15 in the Broughard [Brouhard] household. These children are apparently from Martha's first marriage to an unknown Wade. The 1850 census lists a Sadrack Wade, Martha J, born TN, and a daughter Nancy, age 1. in the 1860 census Martha J Wade is widowed.

  • Lucinda Ware Brouhard- wife of Jerome. Daughters born to them, Agnes N 12 Feb 1881, and Anna E 27 Mar 1888. Lucinda, Daughter of James and Mary Ware, was born near Dunnville, Iowa, Dec. 17, 1852, and passed away at her home west of Bloomfield, April 11, 1928, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 24 days. She received her education by attending the country school and Troy Academy. Agnes Nora passed away 9 May 1938, bd IOOF.

     Corydon Brouhard- The spelling of the last name is found several ways, Brouhard is as on his stone, although it has been read as Brouhard, Bronhard and Broughard. Corydon was born in Indiana, and married Miss Lilena Stanley in 1866. The 1860 Bloomfield Township census lists Corydon in the family of John [Broughand]. John is a blacksmith, age 42 and was born in the state of Ohio. Corydon's siblings consist of Nancy E, age 20, later to become Mrs Elrod. Thomas, age 17, born IN; Anabel, 10, Jerome, age 8, John age 6, Byron, age 4, born Iowa, and Clarissa under 1 year. See Clarrisa above. The 1870 census [Broughard] shows father John at age 53, a Martha J, age 43, keeping house. Nancy Ellen is at the age of 29, Jerome, age 19, and working on the farm. Milton, age 17, Byron, 14, Clarissa, aged, 11, and Joseph age 8, born Iowa. Thomas and Anabel are gone from the household. 1880 census once again spells the family name Bronhard, with father John at age 63, and his father being from VA and his mother NJ. Martha J is still in household, along with Joseph at the age of 18, Effie and Edward Whybrow grandchildren, ages 8 and6. Corydon had 2 children at the time of his death. Mrs Jennie Bowling and Mrs Ora Ware. His 2nd marriage was to Jennie Tompkins and they had a child Ray Broughard. He was survived by 1 sister, Ellen Elrod, 3 1/2 brothers, and 2 1/2 sisters. 3

  • Ella Brouhard- Daughter of Jerome C & Lucinda.

     John Brouhard-  The 1860 Bloomfield Township census lists the family of John [Broughand]. John is a blacksmith, age 42 and was born in the state of Ohio. The 1870 census [Broughard] shows father John at age 53, a Martha J [Wade], age 43, keeping house. Nancy Ellen is at the age of 29, Jerome, age 19, and working on the farm. Milton, age 17, Byron, 14, Clarissa, aged, 11, and Joseph age 8, born Iowa. Thomas and Anabel are gone from the household. 1880 census once again spells the family name Bronhard, with father John at age 63, and his father being from VA and his mother NJ. Martha J is still in household, along with Joseph at the age of 18, Effie and Edward Whybrow grandchildren, ages 8 and 6. 

     Nancy Ellen Brouhard Elrod- was born October 4, 1839, in Shelby County, Indiana. She was 1 of a family of 8 children, 2 sisters and 3 brothers whom survive. The father of her children passed away some 33 years ago. Since then has made her home with her children, and for the most part with her son. She was the mother of 2 children, Mrs Alma Parker, deceased; and Bert, of Brush, Colorado. Immediately after her daughter's death she and her son went to Colorado and here she lived until her death. She has not been confined to her bed, but has been able to be about all the time. She was taken to the hospital for care but was only there a few hours when she was claimed by death, passing away on June 15, 1917, at the age of 77 years, 8 months, and 11 days. Funeral services were conducted at the home of the deceased's brother, Jerome Brouhard, Monday, June 18, at 2:30 PM. The services were conducted by Rev Geo E Purdy, pastor of the Christian Church. A quartet composed of Misses Noble, Cavanaugh; Mrs Darnielle and Mrs W E Wishard sang, with Miss Hancock at the piano. Interment followed in the cemetery near the Brouhard home.3 Elrod, Eli, farmer, carpenter and builder, section 11, postoffice Pulaski; was married the 3rd time to his present wife, Miss Nancy E Braughead[Brouhard], a native of Indiana, and they have 2 children, Alma E and Adelbert J [Bert].1

    Wm R Haynes- Haines, is the spelling found elsewhere. Married to Martha J Coy, daughter of Daniel Coy. 1880 census, Wm Haines, age 32 of OH, Martha 26, born IA, children Cora C., age 5, Ida F., age 4, and Omer, 2.

     Meshach Hale-The 1860 census is where we find Meschack at age 55, born TN. His wife Polly age 51 born, KY, Peggy J at the age of 24, born IL, Rachael at the age of 28, Nathan, age 15, and Willis age 9, born Iowa. Also Thomas age 32, a farmer, born in Illinois. In the 1870 census, Meshach is not present, Willis is head of household at the age of 20, a Matthew shows up from TN and aged 65. Polly is keeping house at the age of 61, and Jane is at the age of 34 and Rachael at 27. By the 1880 census we know Meshach is gone and Polly at the age of 71, father and mother from Ireland. Jane the daughter is still at home at the age of 42. Rachael is present as is Gracie a granddaughter at the age of 6. Also in the home are Thomas Loveless, 20 of Iowa, and John Williams, 29 from Sweden. 

  • Jane Hale- was born in Illinois, January second, 1836 and departed this life March 17, 1910, age 74 years 2 months and fifteen days. She was a member of a family of twelve children, six girls and six boys, six of the number having gone before, 3 dying in infancy. She cam from Illinois to Iowa with her parents in 1846, making her one of the early pioneers of Davis county, and has lived here at the old homestead for about fifty-seven years. She united with the Christian church at the age of eighteen and was always faithful and did the best she could. Three brothers and two sisters left to mourn her loss: Nancy Cammack of Sheldon, Mo., William Hale of University Park, Mehala Headrick, of Bellingham, Wash., Nathan Hale of Kirksville, Mo., and Willis Hale of Sheldon, Mo. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Ferrall, Saturday, March 19, at 1 o'clock pm at the home of Ad Munn 2 1-2 mile west of town and the burial was made in the Cammack cemetery. She rests from her labor.

     Milton L Hartman- A Milton Hartman is first found in the 1860 census for Davis County, in the township of Bloomfield. He is here at the age of 12, born Indiana, with a sister, Sarena, in the Thomas Mills home. The 1870 census, he has left the household. He also shows in the 1880 census as a Male, aged 31, born IN. Not sure what his connection is to the Hale family.

  • Malinda F Mills- Malinda Frances Mills, daughter of Thomas and Malinda Mills, was born in Davis County, Iowa, Feb. 28, 1860, and departed this life at her home west of Bloomfield, Tuesday, July 29, 1930, at the age of seventy years, five months and one day. She grew to womanhood on the farm where she was born, two and one-half miles west of Bloomfield and lived there until the home was broken up shorlty after the death of the mother after which she, together with a brother Milton Hartman who preceeded her in death last November, and a sister, Lucy Mills, moved to a smaller farm about one mile west of Bloomfield. She was converted to the Christian faith in early womanhood, and united with the Christian church at Bloomfield during the pastorate of Rev Northcut. She remained a faithful member and when health permitted was regular in attendance upon church services. Those near to her feel it can be truthfully said of her "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith." Of a family of 8 children, she is survived by only 2, J W Mills and Lucy Mills, and a nephew Gerald Mills, who with more distant relatives and friends mourn her departure. funeral services were held at the home west of Bloomfield at 2:00 pm Thursday, July 31st, conducted by C V Allison. Burial was made in the Cammack cemetery.

     Matilda Mills- From the 1860 census, Matilda is the wife of Thomas Mills. Thomas is a farmer at the age of 33, and born in TN. The children listed at this time are Nancy E, age 12, born VA; James B, age 9, born in Iowa, Jesse W, 2, and Malinda at 3 months. See above. Also in the household are Sarena, and Milton Hartman. By the 1870 census Thomas is gone as head of household, and James has left also. Jesse is at the age of 12, Melinda, 10, Matilda has arrived and is age 8. Sarah is also part of the family now, born abt. 1865. Sarena and Milton Hartman are gone and replaced by a William Hartman, aged 21, born Iowa. Again in the 1880 census, Matilda is head of household, father and mother born in KY. Jesse is still at home, with daughters Malinda, Jane and Sarah. 

     Matilda Jane Mills- was born near Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa, Oct 23, 1861 and departed this life Oct 30, 1902, being 40 years and 8 days old at the time of her death. She united with the Christian church at Bloomfield in 1896 and lived a consistent Christian life. She had many months of suffering, but bore it with patience and Christian grace. The funeral was held at the home Thursday Oct 30, 1902, 3 PM, conducted by Alice H Wyckizer, of Bloomfield. The deceased leaves 2 brothers and 2 sisters to mourn her loss.3

  • Sarah Lucy Mills- daughter of Tom & Matilda Mills, was born Aug 4, 1864 & died at home in Bloomfield, January 23, 1938.  Lived in Davis County all her life, leaving behind 1/2 brother Milton Hartman, 2 sisters Lindie & Jane, and a brother Jess. Her nephew Gerald Mills son of Jess & Lila Mills. - Bloomfield Democrat Thurs, Jan 27, 1938.

     Charlotte Neal-Gravestone says Charlotte Neal. WPA records state wife of RH Neal. Peggy Arnold read as wife of RH Nason. 1870 Davis County census shows a Richard Neal aged 59, from OH, and his wife Charlotte, age 56, born Ohio. An Elias J, age 22, and Susan A. In the 1880 census, Richard Neal is 70, and his father from VA, Mother MD. Charlotte is at the age of 66, born Ohio, her parents from VA. Also close is E[Elias]J Neal, aged 32, his wife Susie, their son Walter, and a daughter Florence, at the age of 1 year.

     R H Neal- WPA records say RH Nason, believe to be incorrect as several census show RH Neal, & Charlotte. No stone 2003.

     Margaret Shafer-Unusual spelling and time of death points to the tax records for the period. A Margaret Ensley and Wm Shafer, bore a son, Charles Franklin, of Pennsylvania, on the 21 Mar 1877, this Charles was of Cleveland township, in Davis County, also known as the area where Margaret is buried.

   John Milton Brouhard was born in Shelby County, Indiana, he removed with his parents to Iowa while quite young. Being converted when a young man and united with the Christian Church. In the fall of 1883, he went to Little River, Kansas and engaged in the mercantile business, in which he remained until a few weeks before his decease. In 1884 he was married to Miss Ella Truitt in Bloomfield, Iowa. Three children blessed their union, 2 of whom survive him, a daughter and son, a daughter having died in infancy. There being no Christian church in the town to which he removed he and his wife united with the Congregational church of Little River. He was known there as a faithful, true Christian worker. Always standing for what he belived to be the right. He suffered long and patiently. He remarked but a few hours before his death that he was "so tired of everything but friends and Heaven." He died May 21st, 1902, aged 49 years, 4 months, and 22 days. Funeral Services were also conducted from the home of Hon W H Taylor in this city, by Rev Potter. His last resting place is in the I O O F Cemetery.
