Union Twp., Section 3, Dallas County, Iowa
South of the present town of Redfield is the town of Wiscotta, to
the east is the cemetery. This cemetery is the first one in Union Twp. and the father of Cavenough brothers was the first buried there. The Cavenough brothers settled where Redfield is now and in 1853 started a town called New Ireland. In 1856 they sold the townsite and a large tract of land to Col. James Redfield. He'd started a town earlier at the junction of south Racoon and middle Racoon called Wiscotta. Railroad went through New Ireland and so all of Wiscotta moved and it was called Redfield. Colonel Redfield was killed in the Civil War at Altoona Pass, Georgia in 1864. In 1865 his nephew, Ward Redfield brought his remains back and permanent burial was made. In 1869 a fine marble monument 12 ft. in height was erected over his grave. The stone says: Col. James Redfield (founder of yonder town) Killed in battle, Oct. 5, 1864 At Altoona, Ga. Aged 40 yrs., 6 mo., 1 day. Velma Renfrow, circa 1970's. |
