Former Clayton Co. residents attending the 'Iowa Society 'Picnic in Los Angeles, 1911

Iowa Picnic at Los Angeles.

Thirty thousand Iowans, residents of Southern California gathered in Eastlake Park, Los Angeles, Washington's Birthday, at the Annual picnic of the Iowa Society and listened to a speech by W. A. Eaton, ex-speaker of the Iowa assembly, ate basket lunch on the grass and had a general jolly time.

Eastlake Park was divided into "99 Counties" and the residents of each county registered names and addresses at a "county seat."

While the bands played and the children romped around on the grass the old folks sat around and wondered how every one back home was feeling in the frost and cold. They heard all about the reason the population declined in Iowa, as Eaton said because Iowa has to furnish the brain and brawn for other states.

Mayor Alexander, of Los Angeles, a native of Iowa, was a guest of honor and though he is almost an octogenarian he had as good a time as the freshest youngster in the park.

The following Iowans, now residents of Southern California, but who formerly resided in Clayton County, were present at the great picnic in Eastlake Park:
