Max Moore pled guilty
to a charge of larceny in the night time and resisting an
officer. He was sentenced to one year in the county jail
but after he has served three months of the sentence he
is to be paroled to the county Sheriff during good
behavior. Glenn Knapp of Marquette pled guilty to a charge of operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent. He was also sentenced to one year in the county jail but after serving 60 days of the sentence he may be paroled. Harry Davies of McGregor pled guilty to a charge of reckless driving and has been fined $100. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 10 Jan. 1940 --- --- H. H. Tindell, of Turkey River, pled guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced to three months in the county jail by Judge W. L. Eichendorf. ~Clayton County Register, 24 Jan. 1940 --- --- Vern Shaw, Jr., who pled guilty to a charge of driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Judge W. L. Eichendorf's court Monday morning was sentenced to three months in the county jail. Two months of the sentence will be suspended during good behavior. Verd Shaw of near Elkport, Monday morning, pled guilty in Justice George Ehrhardt's court to a charge of drunkedness. He was fined $5.00 and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 31 Jan. 1940 --- --- Ernie and Henry Heins, both of Luana, are serving jail sentences of 30 days for hunting pheasants in closed territory. The men were convicted in the court of Justice Ray Barton. ~Clayton County Register, 31 Jan. 1940 --- --- Lester Schierholz of Guttenberg is serving a ten-day sentence in the county jail on a charge of intoxication. He was committed to jail by Justice George Ehrhardt last Friday. ~Clayton County Register, 07 Feb. 1940 --- --- Donald Collins pled guilty to the charge of illegal sale of intoxicating liquor and he was fined $135. and costs, which has been paid. ~Clayton County Register, 14 Feb. 1940 --- --- Lloyd Fenton was brought over from Strawberry Point, Monday, to serve 30 days in the county jail on an assault and battery charge. Sentence was imposed by Mayor Frank Mantz of Strawberry Point. ~Clayton County Register, 27 Mar. 1940 --- --- Alex Jaeger pled guilty to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated before Judge T. H. Goheen in District Court. He was fined $150. and given 90 days in the county jail. Seventy-five days of the jail sentence were suspended during good behavior. ~Clayton County Register, 03 Apr. 1940 --- --- Stanley Ellege 21 Garber pled guilty Monday before Judge T. H. Goheen to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced to three months in the county jail and appeal bond was fixed at $1,000. ~Clayton County Register 17 Apr. 1940 --- --- George Dillon of Edgewood and Eugene Stalnaker of Strawberry Point were fined $10. and costs on charges of drunkenness. Bill Burden, Mason City negro, on a drunk and disorderly charge, was given a choice of 30 days in the county jail or leaving the county within 10 hours, he chose the latter. Kenneth Schneider of Monona, and Otto Doeppke, Jr., of Clayton Center, received fines of $25. each on charges of reckless driving. Albert Johnson, Marquette, was sentenced to serve 30 days in the county jail on an assault and battery charge. A petty larceny charge brought a sentence of 30 days to Bartley Young, 21, who was charged with stealing auto tires. ~Clayton County Register, 24 Apr. 1940 --- --- LeRoy Durr and Cleophus Anderson, both of McGregor, pled guilty to the charge of breaking and entering. Each was sentenced to one year in the county jail. Six months, however, will be suspended during good behavior after six months have been served. Mrs. Audey Knight, Marquette, plead guilty to the charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. She was sentenced to three months in the county jail and fined $300. and costs. Paul M. Donovan plead guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced to three months in the county jail and fined $300. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 01 May 1940 --- --- Joe Vodicka and Ed. Andregg, both commercial fishermen, were both charged with fishing without a license and were fined $25. and costs. Vodicka paid his fine but Andregg served his fine out in the county jail. Raymond Luther and Adolph Walter were charged with selling game fish. They were fined $100. and costs and are serving their fines out in the county jail. ~Clayton County Register, 22 May 1940 --- --- Charles Allen, 59 year-old transient, was arrested in Marquette on a charge of having in his possession property alleged to have been stolen from a freight car. He admitted having sold some of the goods but claimed to have found them. He was sentenced to serve 15 days in the county jail. Clarence Johnson, on a drunk and disorderly charge, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. ~Clayton County Register, 22 May 1940 --- --- CCC youths, Devell I. Phillips and Paul C. Koefoed, tore the left running board and left rear fender from Deputy Sheriff Arnold Mueller's car as they passed him Saturday evening between Littleport and Edgewood. To make matters worse the youths kept right on going, never stopping to see how serious the damage was. The Deputy Sheriff gave chase and caught them west of Edgewood. Brought to Justice George Ehrhardt's court the youths pled guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. Phillips was sentenced to 30 days in jail and Koefoed's sentence was for 15 days in jail. ~Clayton County Register, 17 July 1940 --- --- Mrs. Edith McCluskey, 35, of Manchester, who admitted her guilt of taking $11. in paper money from the purse of Dorothy Hunter, while at Hand's Cafe, was fined $50. and costs by Justice Ray Barton. Mrs. McCluskey paid the fine and immediately left town (Elkader). ~Clayton County Register, 31 July 1940 --- --- Marvin Freidley, 19, of Edgewood. pled guilty in Judge H. E. Taylors court, to the charge of breaking and entering in the night time. He was given an indeterminant sentence not to exceed 10 years in the men's reformatory at Anamosa, where he was taken by the Sheriff yesterday. Emory Ginnett, 18, who was a parolee of the boys' training school at Eldora, has been returned there to complete his term. He and Marvin Freidley and Lloyd Brandley, 24, of Waterloo, are a trio who robbed the Fenstermann store at Wood Center, broke into a filling station at Elkport and are alleged to have stolen a car at Waterloo. Brantley expects to go before the Judge to enter his plea next Monday. John E. Winchel, 34, of Guttenberg, pled guilty to a charge of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated and Judge Taylor sentenced him to three months in the county jail. Harvey Hines, 22, of Luana, was charged with pointing a gun at another person and was given the choice of serving 15 days in jail or paying a fine of $10. and costs by Justice Ray Barton. He chose the latter and paid his fine. Four boys, ranging from 8 to 10 years of age, testified Hines pointed a gun at them while they were swimming, and that as they ran away Hines shot the gun off over their heads. ~Clayton County Register, 14 Aug. 1940 --- --- This is the collection of slot machines seizeed in the
