Nicholas Garrett Vander Linden (1858-1937) was born in Pella, Iowa, son of pioneers from Holland and died in Clarke County, Iowa. He was married to Kommertje Sterrenberg, born 1862 in Pella, Iowa, also from Holland heritage, and died in Clarke County, Iowa; both buried in the Murray Cemetery, Murray, Iowa. They came to Clarke County in 1895, settling in Troy Township where they raised their large family of eight children: 1.-Ernest b. 1884 is still alive m. Anna Smith (1884-1964) of Osceola, 3 ch: (Milo; Mildred, Max, dec'd). 2.-Tossie (1886-1962) m. Harry R. Dickey (1882-1938), 3 ch: (Clarence, Doris, Jean). 3.-Nettie m. Charles Howard, 3 ch: Thelma, Elizabeth, Dorothy). 4.-Guy m. Margaret Catherine (Katie) Fisher, 9 sons: (Marvin, Richard, Ernest, Donald, Gerald, Herman, Keith, Leland, Dale). Guy Nicholas Vander Linden, son of Nicholas Garrett and Kommertje (Sterrenberg) Vander Linden, was born February 21, 1889 in South Dakota and died March 9, 1980 in Clarke County, Iowa. A graduate of the Murray High School class of 1908, he attended Highland Park University in Des Moines, Iowa, and taught school for six years around the Murray-Thayer areas, teaching at Cornfield College; Washington No. 1 northeast of Murray, one year south of Thayer, and farmed part time. He prepared a 27 page oration, all handwritten for his graduating thesis on "Trad with Japan", and the manuscript is still in perfect condition.

He was united in marriage on December 20, 1911 to Margaret Catherine (Katie) Fisher at the home of the bride's parents in Thayer (the house still standing). Daughter of Jacob and Alice Claypool Fisher, she was born December 19, 1891 in Ohio, and died June 10, 1981 in Clarke County, Iowa. Guy taught after their marriage, and was a part time farmer, working for awhile running the Kerr McGee filling station in Osceola, and he sold Wallace's Farmer subscriptions

to help meet the needs of a growing and demanding family. They became the parents of nine sons.:

Aug. 12, 1915 on the McCarty place 1/2 mi. east of cemetery and 1 1/2 mi. south, Murray, Iowa, m. Lavina Coon, 4 ch: (Patricia, David, Darwin, Darrell). 4.-Donald Vander Linden b. Mar. 4, 1918 on the old McCarty place, m. Ruth Broadhurst, 4 ch: (Nolan, Cathy, Scott, Kenny). 5.-Gerald Vander Linden b. October 4, 1920 north of Leslie, m. Norma Hoover, 1 ch: (Claire). (The next three sons born east of where Larry O'Neall now lives on the south side of the road). 6.-Herman Vander Linden b. Oct. 4, 1922, d. Nov. 5, 1979 m. Lois Broadhurst, 5 ch: (Margaret, Aronlee, Connie, Arlinda, Raymond). 7.-Keith Vander Linden m. Barbara Becker, 2 ch: (Judy, Peggy). 8.-Leland Vander Linden b. Apr. 9, 1930 m. (1) Irene Haltom, 1 ch: (Kevin), m. (2) Irene Hannon, 2 ch: (Kim, Pam), she had two children by previous marriage: (Linda, Rayma). 9.-Dale Vander Linden b. April 29, 1932 m.
