Ames, Levi M., born 1 July 1844 Wakefield, New Hampshire. son of Samuel B. and Sally Ames. Died 29 Dec 1899 Marcus IA Enlisted 21 Aug 1862 Concord, New Hampshire Discharged 28 Feb 1863 Philadelphia, PA. Pvt. Co A 13th Reg. Inf. New Hampshire Vol. Lived with brother Moses and family in LaSalle, Ill. in 1870.   Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.
Atwood, T.W. (Tobias ?) Born 5 Sept.1836 at Stuben, Ill. Wife Mary A.  Died at 63 yrs of age on 02-18-1899  Lived in Trenton, Iowa  at enlistment in Company H, Iowa 37th Iowa Infantry Regiment on 27 Feb 1863.  Promoted to Full 8th Corporal on 08 Jun 1863. Promoted to Full 6th Corporal on 29 Apr 1864.  Promoted to Full 7th Corporal on 02 Jan 1864. Mustered out on 24 May 1865 at Davenport, IA. Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Booth, J.R. (James Rufus) Born 12 April 1842 in Mercer Pennsylvania. Enlisted Company G 10th IL Volunteer US Infantry. Married Annis S. Gray 24 January 1867 in Terre Haute, Henderson, Illinois.  They had 6 children.  Moved to Tilden Twp. in 1882.  Died 11 February 1910 at 68 yrs of age.   Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.
Chapman, Thomas E. Born 3 Aug. 1816.  Died Feb. 1880.  Married  Lydia Lavina Smith about 1876, they had 4 children.  Believed to have enlisted in the 7th Wisconsin Inf.

Chatterton, H.D. (Henry) Born 29 March 1838 in England. Married to  Lois Malvina Simons  Lived in Mount Pleasant, IA. Enlisted in Company B, Iowa 25th Infantry Regiment on 13 Aug 1862. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 01 May 1863. Mustered out on 01 May 1863.  Commissioned an officer in Company I, U.S. 46th Infantry Regiment on 01 May 1863. Mustered out on 14 Sep 1863. Died 23 June 1891. Buried Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Countermine, W.H. (William) born 2 July 1842 Schenectady County, New York to James Hasbrouck and Sarah (Morrison) Countermine   When the war broke out he enlisted and served with Company I, 134 New York infantry. He served 3 years and spent his 21st birthday on the Gettysburg battle field as an orderly. He served under Gen. George Hooker. He was also with Gen. Sherman in his famous march to the sea. Married Ellen Miller Dougall. Died on 11-9-1913 Lived in Liberty, Cherokee Co., IA. Buried Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

DeHart, Isaac Born 20 Sept. 1830 in Monroe County, West Virginia to Samuel and Sophia (Spade) Dehart.  Married to  Minerva Susan Skaggs on 29 April 1854 in Monroe County, West Virginia.  Served the Confederacy from Virginia.  He enlisted as a  Private in Company D, 108th Militia Infantry Regiment Virginia.  He was a prisoner of war. He died Thanksgiving Day Nov. of 1911  at Cleghorn, Cherokee Co. IA. and buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery

Ellis, J. B. (John Ballard) Born 06-15-1834 Temple, Maine  Wife Jane Ellis.  Service Record: Enlisted in Company G, Iowa 2nd Cavalry Regiment on 11 Oct 1861. Promoted to Full 8th Corporal on 01 Nov 1864. Promoted to Full 4th Corporal on 01 Aug 1865. Promoted to Full 6th Corporal on 12 Feb 1865.  Mustered out on 19 September 1865 at Selma, AL.  Died                     02-08-1920 on Cleghorn farm.  Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.
 
Franck, (Frank) Leopold  Born October 17,1829 in  France. Immigrated in 1861. Married in 1859 to Elizabeth Delevan of Belgium. They had 12 children.  Enlisted at age 18 on Dec. 8, 1862 in Batavia, NY.  Service Record: Enlisted in Company C, New York 151st Infantry Regiment on 22 Oct 1862.  Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant.  Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 21 Jan 1865.  Mustered out on 26 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC.  Died Cherokee County Iowa on June 23, 1900 at age 71.  Buried Holy Name Cemetery, Marcus, IA

Goodburn, Henry  Information received from Eleanor Beaton 3208 W. Cactus Rd., Phoenix Az 85029 (Great Granddaughter) The family believes he was with Sherman on his “walk to the sea”.  Born Oct. 15,1838 in Council Hills, Ill.  Died May 27,1916 in Marcus, IA Married Jane Ann Wylam in Hazel Green, Wisc.. on Aug. 10, 1862. Six children; George, Jane, Elmer (Eleanor’s grandfather), Mable, Jasper, Jennie. Jane and Jasper died as infants.   Enlisted Aug 1, 1862 in galena , Ill. Company G 96th Illinois infantry under Gen. Logan. He fought in battles at Raymond, Tupelo, Verone, Champaign Hills and Vicksburg. Reassigned to Gen. Buell under Sherman in April 1864 as teamster, guarding supply trains (wagons and mules) from Nashville to Savannah, Georgia 1865. One of the few survivors of the Wheels Cavalry (CSA) raid near Franklin Tenn. 1864. He walked to Nashville by escaping through the woods. At Jonesboro, Georgia wagon trains were trapped by Gen. Hood’s forces escaping from Atlanta siege, was lifted by Wilson Cavalry (USA) coming out of Macon, Georgia. He was discharged July 1865. Died at 77 yrs of age, buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Haynes, N.A. (Napoleon A.) Born 07-03-1833 in Portage, Ohio to Benjamin and Christina (Bossinger) Haynes.  Married and moved to Cherokee County Iowa prior to 1880.  Served Company A 100th Indiana Inf. Died 04-05-1893, buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Heath, R.W. (Robert Sr.) Born 16 Aug. 1831 in Pennsylvania.  Married to Emeline Heath. Parents of 5 children. Died 27 Sept 1892.  Enlisted in Company Batty F, 5th Heavy Artillery Regiment PA on 2 Sep 1864.  Mustered Out Company Batty F, 5th Heavy Artillery Regiment PA on 30 Jun 1865 at Pittsburgh, PA.  Robert Heath Jr. is on the west side of the stone and Robert Heath Sr. (Civil War soldier) is on the east side.

Heller, A.H. (Adam) Born 3-27-1845 in Ohio.  Residence: 3rd Congressional District, Iowa.    Enlistment at age 20 in Company G, Iowa 13th Infantry Regiment, mustered out because of illness. Enlisted again on 05 Oct 1864. Mustered out on 21 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY. Married Susan Pitt. Died at 68 yrs of age on 11-03-1913 Marcus IA. Buried Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Hopkins, Jacob . Born 4 March 1832 in Stark Co. Indiana.  Enlisted in Company K of
the 12th Wisconsin volunteers but became ill and returned home to recover his health. As soon as he was able he enlisted in the 43rd Wisconsin volunteers company C where he served until the end of the war. He was one of the last mustered out and came home enfeebled and broken in health. He and wife Jane and family lived on a farm north of Cleghorn.  Died 5 November 1900 in Hoxsie, Kansas while visiting his son. Body brought back to Marcus for burial in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery

Langham, William Born 1835 in Pennsylvania.  Married to Elizabeth. Enlisted as a Private on 30 March 1864 at the age of 32  in Company K, 40th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 18 Apr 1864.
Mustered Out Company K, 40th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 2 Aug 1865 at Fort Gibson, CN. Died 1890. Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery

McCaustland, Thomas  Born 7 April 1827. Resident of Quincy, Wisconsin.  Enlisted on 14 Nov 1864.  Drafted to Company D, Wisconsin 18th Infantry Regiment on 14 Nov 1864. Mustered out on 18 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY. Wife Mary. Died at 92 yrs of age on 02-01-1920.  Buried Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.  


Miller, Wireman Born 20 April 1845 in Bedford County Pennsylvania Enlisted at age 19 in Davenport Iowa on 25 Aug 1864.  Served in  Company D, Iowa 11th Infantry Regiment and was with Sherman and the march to the sea.   Mustered out on  2 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC.  In 1870 he settled in Amherst Township Cherokee County Iowa.  He served in the Iowa Legislature and was instrumental in the location of the State Hospital in Cherokee.   Married to Maggie Ledman.  Died at 72 yrs of age on 05-03-1917 and is buried in the Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Nelson, P.B. (Peter ) Born 23 January 1840 in Hallandslan Sweden.  He lived in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Prior to entering the Civil War he married Josephine Peterson on 6 December 1862 in LaCrosse Wisconsin. They were the parents of 9 children.  He was a member of the 1st Wisconsin HV. Artillery during the Civil War. They moved to Marcus prior to 1880.  Died at 76 yrs of age on 06-09-1917. Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Porter, R.M. (Robert M.) Born 5 Nov. 1844 in  Manchester, England. Married  Ellen Stinson in  Concord Township, Bureau County, Illinois on 13 February 1869. They had 7 children.  served 3 years with the 134th Reg. of Illinois Vol. Died at 65 yrs of age on 02-16-1910  Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Rose, W.E. (Wm. E.) born 25 May 1843 in Portsville, New York.  Enlisted 10 Sept 1864 Olean N.Y. Discharged 12 July 1865 Alexandria, VA.  Pvt. Co B 15th NY Vol. Cav.  Served under Gen. George E. Custer.  He was present at Appomattox, Virginia courthouse when the war ended on 9 April 1865.  A vivid memory of his was chasing John Wilkes Booth, who shot himself when surrounded by soldiers.  Married Emma Glines.  Mr. Rose died at 90 yrs of age on 13 May 1934 Marcus IA  Buried Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.  

Weaver, S.W. (Samuel) Born 10 June 1827 in McNairy County, Tennessee.  He married Julia A. Stokes in Blue Grass, Iowa on 5 March 1849.  They were the parents of 5 children.  Enlisted in Company K 112th Ills. Vol. Inf.  14 August 1862, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 29 June 1863.  He participated in 86 engagements and was mustered out 20 June 1865.  In 1876 he moved his family to Marcus.  Died at 77 yrs of age on 06-18-1904. Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Wells, N.T. (Nicholas)  born 25 October 1845 in Wellsville,  Montgomery Co., MO.  Marriage to Jane Wood 'Jennie' Parker. They had 5 children.  In 1990 he lived in Amherst & Tilden Townships, Cherokee Co., Iowa. He joined the Union Army in 1864, Co. K-40th Reg Wisc. Inf Vol., at the age of 18 and served under General Washburn in Tennessee. Died April 14, 1943 at the age of 97.  Buried in Marcus/Amherst Cemetery.

Wirt, J.D. (Joseph) Born 18 June 1842 in Lycoming  Pennsylvania.  He moved to Jackson County Iowa at the age of 12 with his parents.  On 17 August 1862 he enlisted with Co. A 24th Iowa Vol. Inf. He was wounded twice.  Mustered out on 17 Jul 1865 at Savannah, GA..  He married Margaret Guentner in 1873, they had 7 children. He came to Amherst Co. Iowa in 1878. Died at 69 yrs of age on 04-20-1911, buried in Marcus/Amherst cemetery.
