Candidates for Miss North Iowa of 1957, as their entries were received by the Mason City Chamber of Commerce offices:


ARLYCE JOHNSON
Miss Burt

The band of Burt High School has chosen Arlyce Johnson to be their queen representative in the North Iowa Band Festival. She is a senior and the daughter of Mrs. Oscar Johnson. Her interests in school have included band, girls' glee club, mixed chorus, basketball, softball, newspaper staff, and she is secretary of the senior class. She also has served as the student secretary of the hot lunch program. Arlyce sings in the church Choir and quartet and is Luther League president. She is a member of the Farm Bureau Youth Program.
 
 
 
 

MAXINE PHILPOTT
Miss Swaledale

Maxine Philpott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Philpott, is the choice of the Swaledale band for queen of the North Iowa Band Festival. In addition to playing the flute and serving as band president while a junior, she has been accompanist for small groups. She has been an honor student, and played on the basketball and softball teams; a cheer leader; active in dramatics; a class officer; and on the newspaper staff 2 years. Maxine won the Homemaker of Tomorrow award and is active in the MYF activities of the Swaledale Methodist Church. She will graduate this year.
 
 

BETTY LOU BRUNS
Miss Dumont

The band of Dumont High School has elected Betty Lou Bruns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bruns, as their queen, She will represent the band and the school at the North Iowa Band Festival. Betty Lou, a senior, is secretary-treasurer of the band; editor of the annual; on the basketball team; secretary of the FBLA; and took parts in the junior and senior class plays. She is president of the Student Council and sings in the glee club and mixed chorus. She is now county president of 4-H, and belongs to the Dorcas Society and Christian Endeavor of Washington Reformed Church.
 

SANDRA RYERSON
Miss Hayfield

The student body of Hayfield High School has chosen Senior Sandra Ryerson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ryerson, to be their queen in the North Iowa Band Festival this year. Sandra has been a drummer in the band for 5 years, as well as singing in the mixed chorus. She was the sophomore class president and secretary-treasurer in her freshman and junior years. She is the senior class reporter for the Hayfield Tattler and played the lead in the class play. Sandra has been a cheerleader for three years.
 
 
 
 

SHARON LOHR
Miss Rockford

Sharon Lohr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Lohr, Rockford, has been chosen by the Rockford Band to be their candidate for Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival. In addition to her participation in musical groups, both instrumental and vocal, she has been a cheerleader and a member of R-Club, Pep Club, F.H.A., and Drivers Club. Sharon has played on the basketball team four years and in her senior year made the third all-state team. Sharon is also active annual and newspaper staffs. She plans to study music at SUI next year.
 
 
 
 

DIXIE DORSEY
Miss Hampton

Dixie Dorsey, chosen as their queen candidate by the Hampton Band, has had a busy career as a baton twirler. She won Division I ratings in baton solo at state marching contests every year since 1953; in baton ensemble in 1955; flag solo, 1955-56. She was the assistant drum major in 1955-56 and the drum major in 1956-57. In addition to her 10-year career in the marching band, Dixie has been a varsity cheerleader; a member of pep squad, G.A.A. and girl's Chorus; in the school play and a candidate for Homecoming Queen and Sweetheart Swirl Queen.
 
 
 

SUE TENOLD
Miss Northwood

Sue Tenold, elected by the Northwood Band as their band queen for 1957, is a senior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn O. Tenold, Northwood. Her school activities have included vocal musical groups, band, cheerleading, speech, dramatics, athletics, newspaper and annual. She is a member of the Luther League and also sings in the church choir. Her favorite pastimes are swimming, golf, water skiing and skating. Sue plans a course in modeling this summer, followed by interior decorating and designing courses at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.
 

DELORES TACK
Miss Wellsburg

Delores Tack is a senior who has been selected by the Wellsburg School to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Tack, who farm near Holland, Iowa. Delores is a member of the band, gleen (sic) club, mixed chorus, Pep Club and Future Nurses Club. She is the publicity chairman for the annual staff and has had parts in both junior and senior class plays.
 
 
 
 
 
 

MYRNA BOERJAN
Miss St. Ansgar

Myrna Boerjan will be St. Ansgar's candidate for Miss North Iowa June 11. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Boerjan, Myrna is a senior. She was chosen Homecoming Queen and Pep Club president; has been [a] cheerleader; a student council member; active in mixed chorus, as well as band; in the cast of junior and senior class plays; member [of] F.H.A. and Science Club; on the staff of the school annual and student office assistant.
 
 
 
 
 
 

JOAN GRIFFITHS
Miss Ventura

An 8-year member of the Ventura band has been selected to represent her band as a candidate for Miss North Iowa. She is Joan Griffiths, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Griffiths. As Homecoming Queen and Sweetheart Queen in 1956, Joan has had experience in reigning as queen. A cheerleader for two years and a member of chorus for four years, Joan also has had time to belong to the annual staff and the student council. She plans to go to Iowa State College next year to study elementary teaching.
 
 
 
 
 
 

ROSE MARIE WALK
Miss Grafton

Versatile is the word best describing the Grafton band queen. Rose Marie Walk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Walk, plays an oboe in the band, is a majorette in the marching band. She sings with the glee club, accompanies music groups and received a Division I rating in piano in the state music contest. She is co-editor of the annual, on the staff of the newspaper, has been in dramatics and was Homecoming Queen this year. Rose Marie has been [a] forward on the basketball team in the state tournaments of 1955 and 1956. She is secretary-treasurer of the senior class and active in church youth work.
 
 
 

MYRNA JEAN HARDEN
Miss Floyd

Myrna Jean Harden, selected by the Floyd band to lead them in the North Iowa Band Festival parade, will enter nurses training at Waterloo in September. She has been in the band for 8 years, playing both flute and saxophone. Myrna has also found time for singing in various groups, cheerleading, twirling, and was majorette with the band last year. She has been active in dramatics, taking part in both class plays; has been on the staffs of the annual and the school paper and participates in church activities. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Harden.
 
 

NANCY WEBER
Miss Swea City

Nancy Weber, the senior elected by the Swea City band as their queen for the North Iowa Band Festival, is a drummer in the band and drum ensemble. She sings in the Girl's Glee Club, accompanies music groups, is a cheerleader, secretary of the Letterman's Club, Pep Club president, secretary of the student council, business manager of the annual staff, on the staff of the school paper and active in class plays. Nancy teaches Sunday school, sings in the church choir and is president of the Baptist Youth Fellowship.
 
 
 
 
 

ELAINE HEAFORD
Miss Rockwell

Elaine Heaford, selected by the Rockwell band to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival, has been a band member for 8 years. She also has sung in vocal groups in the school and attended the All-State chorus contest. Elaine, a senior, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Heaford, has been active in basketball, softball, annual staff and cheer-leading. She is a member of the Lutheran American Church where she teaches Sunday School, sings in the choir and is helping promote youth league work.
 
 
 
 
 

WILRETTA McCONNELL
Miss Graettinger

Wilretta McConnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McConnell, is a twirler in the marching band as well as a member of the French horn section in the concert band. She is a cheerleader, has played basketball for four years, is active in vocal music, and in the top per cent of her class scholastically. She is planning a career in nursing after graduation this year. Wilretta was chosen by the Graettinger band to be their queen in the North Iowa Band Festival.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

SHARON BRENNAN
Miss Manly

The band of Manly High School is sending Sharon Brennan, daughter of William Brennan, to the North Iowa Band Festival as their queen candidate. Sharon is a senior and has had a varied list of activities while in school. Her interests include band, chorus, glee club and other vocal groups and dramatics. She is president of the band and received a I rating in the 1956 vocal contest.
 
 
 
 
 
 

CAROLE GREER
Miss Meservey

Carole Greer is a senior and the choice of the band members of Meservey for their band queen. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Greer. In addition to her activities in both instrumental and vocal music, Carole was on the first team which went to the state girls basketball tournament. Following graduation she plans a summer course in laboratory training and will be a doctor's receptionist. Carole sings contralto and received a Division I in the state music contest this year. She plays French horn in the band.
 

SHARON BRUNSVOLD
Miss Hanlontown

Choice of the Hanlontown band to lead them in the parade on Band Festival Day June 11 is Sharon Brunsvold, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brunsvold. In addition to concert and marching bands, Sharon sings in glee club and small groups, has been on the staff of the school paper, co-editor of the annual, secretary-treasurer of the senior class and also of the band. She is active in the Luther League of Elk Creek Lutheran Church, and has been active in 4-H work for 8 years.
 
 

PAT WOODHOUSE
Miss Plymouth

Pat Woodhouse, though just a junior, has already had a busy career in high school. She plays clarinet in the band and sings in the glee club and trio. She has worked on the school annual and paper and has done librarian work. For 3 years Pat has been secretary of her class. The high school band members have elected her as their queen candidate for the North Iowa Band Festival. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Woodhouse.
 
 
 
 

KAYLA PEDERSON
Miss Scarville

Kayla Pederson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Pederson, is the senior chosen by the Scarville band to be their queen in the North Iowa Band Festival. In addition to her career as a band member for four years, Kayla sings in the chorus, has been a cheerleader for four years, played basketball for four years and has twice been elected a class officer. She is on the annual staff and a member of the student council.
 
 
 
 
 
 

JUDY ANDERSON
Miss Thompson

Judy Anderson is the choice of the student body of Thompson High School to be a candidate for Miss North Iowa at the band festival June 11. She is just a junior by has played cornet in the band for six years. Judy also plays in small instrumental groups and participates in the vocal music program. She is secretary of the band and treasurer of the junior class; music editor of the Cub Courier; a member of pep club; is in one-act plays and plays basketball. She was chosen Miss Winnebago R.E.A. in 1956.
 
 
 
 
 

CORAL ELSBURY
Miss Rock Falls

Coral Elsbury, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron C. Elsbury, was elected by her bandmates to be their representative for the title of Miss North Iowa in the Iowa Band Festival. Coral, a senior, has played clarinet for all four years of high school, as well as singing in the girls' glee club and sextet. She has also been active in dramatics, playing parts in both class plays. She has been a class officer 2 years, and has played basketball and softball.
 
 
 
 
 
 

KAY FITZGERALD
Miss Armstrong

Members of the Armstrong band elected Kay Fitzgerald to lead them in the parade on June 11, North Iowa Band Festival Day. Kay is a senior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald who farm near Armstrong. She plays both bassoon and clarinet, and has been a band member for 9 years. In addition to playing in instrumental groups, Kay sings in various vocal groups and accompanies solo and small groups. She has been active in speech activities and is a Future Homemaker of America. Kay is president of the Swea Sunbeams 4-H club and is a member of St. Mary's Church where she sings in the choir and is assistant organist.
 

MARCIA RUSSELL
Miss Colwell

Marcia Russell, a junior, was chosen by the student body of Colwell school to be Miss Colwell in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. She is the daughter of S. W. Russell, manager of a grain elevator. President of the junior class, Marcia plays snare drum in the band; sings in the girls' trio; accompanies both girls and boys chorus; is a state champion flag twirler; plays basketball; has had parts in class plays; had been a cheerleader for 3 years; has been an active member of 4-H for 7 years; and is an officer in the young people's group of her church.
 
 
 
 

TRUDY BESS
Miss Titonka

Leading the Titonka band in the parade on June 11, Band Festival Day, will be Trudy Bess. She is a junior and was elected by the school band as their candidate for Miss North Iowa. She is a member of the concert band; a twirler in the marching band; plays basketball and soft ball; is a member of the student council; was the 1957 sectional free throw champion; is active in declamatory work; and has a high scholastic standing. Trudy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Bess, also takes part in church and community activities.
 
 
 
 
 
 

RUBY ROEGNER
Miss Geneva

Ruby Roegner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Roegner, is the senior who will lead the Geneva band in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. She was elected by the student body. In addition to her band activity she has participated in chorus, dramatics, basketball, softball; is co-editor of the school newspaper, on the annual stiff and is secretary-treasurer of the senior class.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

CAROLYN JEAN TRELOAR
Miss Nora Springs

Carolyn Jean Treloar, a senior and daughter of Mrs. Evelyn Treloar, is the choice of the Nora Springs Band for Miss North Iowa candidate. She will lead her band in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City, June 11. She has been a band member 4 years; is salutatorian of her class; was Homecoming Queen this year; vice president of the junior and senior classes; took parts in the plays both years; played basketball 4 years; is an officer of the Luther League and was secretary-treasurer of the band 3 years.
 
 
 
 

PHYLLIS CLARK
Miss Orchard

The students of Orchard school elected Phyllis Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Clark, to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City on June 11. Phyllis is 19, a senior, and secretary-treasurer of her class. She plays clarinet in the band; is band librarian; circulation manager of the school paper; is interested in dramatics and was [a] forward on the basketball team. She has a B average scholastically. Her outside interests include 4-H and the Order of Rainbow; she sings in the church choir and is active in the church youth group. Her hobbies are cooking and sewing.

Miss Alden

The candidate elected by the members of the Alden band to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11, is Cathy Klein. She is a senior and the daughter of Walter Klein. She has been a band member since 8th grade and plays in small groups as well as accompanying vocal groups and solos. PATTY JOHNSON
Miss Popejoy

Patty Johnson, daughter of Cliff Johnson, a retired farmer of Iowa Falls, is the choice of the Popejoy band as its candidate for Miss North Iowa in the North Iowa Band Festival June 11. Patty is the president of the junior class, plays clarinet in the band, participated in small instrumental groups, sings in the mixed chorus, and plays guard on the girls basketball team.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

GEORGIA GREINER
Miss Lyle

Contending for the title of Miss North Iowa on June 11, will be Georgia Greiner, choice of the Lyle band. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Greiner of Lyle, Minn. This senior plays clarinet in the band in small groups. She is co-editor of the yearbook and a member of the National honor Society. Her interests outside school include all sports, especially basketball, softball and skating. She enjoys sewing and homemaking. In addition to her school activities she also participated in church work.
 
 
 
 

SHIRLEY BARNEY
Miss Chapin

Shirley Barney will be Miss Chapin in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. A senior, she was the choice of the students of high school and junior high school to ride at the head of their band in the parade. Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Barney. She plans to attend Iowa State Teachers College to prepare for teaching in the junior high school. She has been class secretary; mixed chorus librarian; and basketball captain. She was head majorette in the band for 5 years.
 
 
 
 

SHIRLEY EVANS
Miss Garner

Garner's candidate for the title "Miss North Iowa" at the Band Festival June 11, is Shirley Evans, a senior member of the band which elected her. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Evans, who operate the airport, her hobby is flying. Shirley has enrolled at S.U.I. She has been a band member for 8 years, and a drum majorette for 3 years. She has won "first" in state contest in both instrumental and vocal work, is a member of the pep club, glee club, chorus, played a leading role in the senior class play, is on the student council, an honor student and active in St. Boniface Church.
 

SHARELL ANN SCHMITZ
Miss Manchester

Sharell Ann Schmitz, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Orville Schmitz, has been chosen by her fellow band members as Manchester's candidate for queen of the 19th North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. She has won acclaim for baton twirling, and teaches a majorette corps of 20 girls. She has taught twirling and ballet for 3 years, and appeared in the latest edition of "Who's Who in Baton Twirling," a national reference book. Sharell also plays flute and piccolo in the band. A junior, she has been named editor of next year's annual staff, and is an honor student.
 
 
 

ELAINE SCHWERIN
Miss Adams

Elaine Schwerin, 18, a senior, will represent Adams, Minn., band in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schwerin. Elaine is a member of the band, chorus, glee club, troubadours, Pep Club, and is a library assistant. She is president of the senior class, vice president of the student council, and co-chairman of the Latin Club. She has appeared in both junior and senior class plays, and was a Homecoming attendant last year.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

ELIZABETH OGREN
Miss Elmore

The Elmore band queen of 1957 was also the Homecoming queen this year. Elizabeth Ogren, the senior who will lead her band in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ogren. She has played the cornet in the concert band, marching band and pip band. She sings in the mixed chorus and girls' glee club and is a member of the student council. Elizabeth is active in Future Teachers of America, speech, dramatics and is an "A-Squad" cheerleader.
 
 
 
 
 
 

JANICE STUSSY
Miss Wells

Janice Stussy, a junior, has been chosen by the members of the Wells, Minn. band to lead them as their queen in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. Following her reign as band queen, Janice will go to Europe this summer as a foreign exchange student. She plays 1st chair flute in the band and orchestra, is a cheerleader, student council member, class officer, GAA member, sings in the choir, is music editor of the school paper. She is a member of the Youth Fellowship of the Methodist Church where she is organist.
 
 
 

MARLYS DRUGG
Miss Forest City

The queen of the Forest City band, Marlys Drugg, plays French horn in the concert and marching bands. A senior, she was elected by the band members to be their candidate for Miss North Iowa Band Festival at the Band Festival, June 11. Maryls is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Drugg. She is a member of the student council, cheerleader, president of the pep committee, county vice president of 4-H, treasurer of the band, FHA member, homecoming attendant 2 years, plays in small instrument groups, attended the Dorian band festival in 1957, and is active in the Youth Fellowship of the Methodist Church.
 

CHARLENE HANSON
Miss Crystal Lake

Band members of Crystal Lake school have chosen a senior, Charlene Hanson, to represent them at the North Iowa Festival, June 11. Charlene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hanson, who farm near Britt. She has been a member of the Crystal Lake band, saxophone quartet, glee club, and mixed chorus for four years. She is vice president of the band, on the annual staff, manager of the girls basketball team, and took part in both junior and senior class plays. She was secretary of her saxophone class and has been class president for the past two years. Charlene is a Sunday School teacher and assistant pianist at the Upper Flat Church.
 

BRENDA FINNESTAD
Miss Fenton

Brenda Finnestad is a junior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Finnestad, who farm near Fenton. She was elected by the band members to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. In addition to her school activities Brenda has been very active in 4-H work. She has been secretary and treasurer of the junior class; played basketball 2 years and has been a cheerleader 3 years. Brenda attends St. John's Lutheran Church where she teaches Sunday School and is a member of the Walther League.
 
 
 
 
 

MARILYN LOGEMANN
Miss Woden

Marilyn Logemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Logemann, is the senior chosen by the Woden band to be its candidate for Miss North Iowa June 11. Marilyn plays flute and is secretary of the band. She sings in the glee club and mixed chorus, and accompanies solos and groups for contests. She is assistant editor of the annual staff and took parts in the junior and senior plays. Marilyn is manager of the girls basketball team. She is a member of the Grant Lutheran Church and the Luther League; sings in the church choir; is pianist for Sunday School; assistant organist for the church and teaches a Sunday school class.
 
 
 

SUSAN INGLE
Miss Alexander

Susan Ingle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orvel Ingle, will top her busy high school career by being the band queen from Alexander at the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. A senior, she has been active in band, vocal music groups and solo work; school paper staff; Future homemakers; assistant director of the senior class play; took part in the junior class play and is treasurer of the senior class. She was elected by the band to be its candidate for Miss North Iowa.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

KATHRYN KOCH
Miss West Bend

Kathryn Koch, a senior, was chosen by the students and faculty of West Band High School to be their representative in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kooch. She plays first chair in the flute section of the band and is a soloist with the chorus. Kathryn also won the Homemaker of the Year Award. MARILYN JOYCE JOHANNESEN
Miss Seneca

Band members of the Seneca School have chosen a sophomore, Marilyn Joyce Johannesen, as their candidate for Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City, June 11. Marilyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johannesen, who farm near Brandcroft. Marilyn sings in the mixed chorus, the sextet, and is active in basketball. She is an active member of the Seneca Stars 4-H club and participates in church activities.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

SHARLEEN SWANSON
Miss Klemme

Sharleen Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swanson, is the choice of the Klemme band to be their candidate for Miss North Iowa, June 11. Sharleen is a senior and a 4-year member of the band. She participates in small instrumental groups and the vocal program. She has been a member of the student council, a class officer two years; is on the annual staff; co-editor of the school paper; and was in junior and senior class plays. She sings in the choir and teaches Sunday School and Bible School at the Evangelical and Reformed Church. She is an officer of the 4-H Club. Sharleen will attend Lakeland College, Plymouth, Wis., next fall.
 
 
 
 

MARILYN ZENTNER
Miss Luverne

Marilyn Zentner was elected by the band of LuVerne school to be a candidate for Miss North Iowa in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. She is a senior who plays baritone horn in the concert band and snare drum in the marching band. She has been active in many small instrumental and vocal groups and sings in the mixed chorus. Marilyn entered the typing contest at AIB in Des Moines and won honors in the speed division. Her father, Lloyd H. Zentner, works for the State Highway Commission in Humboldt.
 
 
 
 

MARILYN DREESMAN
Miss Algona

Marilyn Dreesman, the senior who will lead the Algona High School band in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11, has had a varied career in high school. She is in the concert band; drum major of the marching band; a member of student council; secretary of the Teen-Age Drivers' Club; assistant director of the class plays; sings in mixed chorus and chorus; was a candidate for Homecoming Queen; is honor student; and belongs to the Bible class of the Lutheran Church. Marilyn was the 1956 All State Music Camp Queen at Iowa City. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Dreesman.
 

JUDY FREEMAN
Miss Goldfield

Leading the Goldfield band in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival June 11 will be Judy Freeman. She is a senior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claire Freeman. She has been a drummer in the band since 6th grade and section leader of the percussion section 3 years. Judy also belongs to the girls glee club and mixed chorus. She is vice president of the senior class. She is a member of the Methodist Church.
 
 
 
 
 
 

PAT SCHUTTER
Miss Buffalo Center

The band of Buffalo Center school has elected Pat Schutter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Schutter, to be its band queen in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. Pat has played the tenor saxophone in the concert and marching bands for six years. She sings in the mixed chorus and girls chorus and has been a cheerleader for six years. BELVA DEE TINDALL
Miss Greene

Belva Dee Tindall, a senior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur E. Tindall, has been elected by the band to be Miss Greene in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. She has been a member of the band 6 years and received Division I rating in state music contest 2 years. She plays the alto sax in small groups and sings in the chorus and sextet. Belva was Homecoming Queen and county officer of 4-H last year. She plans to attend state conservation camp this year as a county delegate. She teaches Sunday School and Bible School and is president of the church young people's society.
 
 
 
 

ELSIE SORLIE
Miss Clear Lake

Elsie Sorlie, a senior and daughter of Mrs. Helen Sorlie, is the choice of the Clear Lake Band as its candidate for Miss North Iowa in the Band Festival June 11. Elsie's activities include many musical groups, both instrumental and vocal. She was in the all-state choir and attended the Dorian Festival at Luther College. She is the picture editor of the annual staff; on the Hi-Tri cabinet; a member of the Pep Club and the Honor Society. Elsie sings in the church choir, accompanies the chancel choir, is treasurer of LDR, president of the Senior League and secretary of the Circuit League. She plans to go to St. Olaf College in the fall.
 
 

SHARON GOURLEY
Miss Corwith

Corwith High School band has elected Sharon Gourley, a junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Gourley, as its band queen. She will ride at the head of her band in parade at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Sharon has been a majorette in the band for 8 years; is a member of the 1956 All-State chorus; is active in dramatics; plays guard on the basketball team; is vice president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and teaches Sunday School. She also sings in the church choir and is junior choir assistant.
 
 
 
 

NANCY SCHUMACKER
Miss Sheffield

Nancy Schumacker is a senior and the niece of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wearda. She was chosen by the Sheffield High School and Jr. High Band members to lead them in the parade June 11. She plays clarinet in the band and participates in many instrumental and vocal groups. She is co-editor of the Annual and plays basketball. Nancy is treasurer of the senior class and a member of the student council. She has had the lead in the senior and junior class plays. She is the organist at the First Methodist Church, a member of the Youth Fellowship and president of the sub-district MYF.
 
 

ANN ERICKSON
Miss Kanawha

Ann Erickson was elected by the band to be Miss Kanawha in the North Iowa Band Festival June 11. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Erickson. Ann is a senior and has participated in mixed chorus, glee club, sextet, band, woodwind trio and quartet, junior and senior class plays and the Madrigal group. She was on the annual staff and a band officer. Ann will ride at the head of her band in the parade and compete for the title of Miss North Iowa.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

MARY SCHMELING
Miss Cylinder

Mary Schmeling, daughter of Erwin Schmeling, is a senior. She was nominated by the male faculty of Cylinder school and elected by the band members, to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11. JANE VAN HORN
Miss Rodman

Jane Van Horn, daughter of Lester Van Horn, was nominated by the men of the faculty and elected by the members of the band, to represent them as Miss Rodman in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Jane is a senior. She is in the saxophone section of the band and sings soprano in the mixed chorus, the girls sextet and solos. She has bee a band officer for two years. Jane plans to be an airline stewardess following graduation.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

LURENE ELLEN BARRETT
Miss Lakota

Lurene Ellen Barrett, a senior and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Barrett, was voted the most representative girl in the senior class for her 4 years of High School. She was elected Miss Lakota, to be a candidate for Miss North Iowa in the Band Festival June 11. She has been very active in all phases of instrumental and vocal programs and has been a member of the basketball team 4 years. She belongs to the L Club; was a class officer junior and senior years; a member of the annual staff; sings in the church choir and is an officer in the Young People's Westminster Fellowship. Lurene plans to enter nurses training in September.
 

HELEN BLISS
Miss Lake Mills

Members of the Lake Mills band have chosen Helen Bliss, president of the band and a member of the drum section, to be their queen for the 1957 Band Festival. Helen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bliss. Her father is a retired teacher. Helen has participated in the vocal program as well as the instrumental, belongs to GAA, Pep Club, Future Teachers Club, the Drama Club and is on the staffs of the Annual and school paper. She is the Sunday School organist, secretary of the Luther League and sings in the church choir.
 
 
 
 

BECKY MICHAELSEN
Miss Grand Meadow

Becky Michaelsen, a senior, will be the candidate for Miss North Iowa from Grand Meadow on June 11, Band Festival Day in Mason City. She is the choice of her fellow band members to lead them in the parade. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Michaelsen. Becky is the president of the senior chorus, president of Speech Club; is active in concert band, dance band, school paper, student council, and has had roles in three class plays.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

ARMON RHODA
Miss Ledyard

Armon Rhoda, a junior, plays alto saxophone in the band and is a majorette. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rhoda, farm near Elmore, Minn. The members of the Ledyard band elected her to be Miss Ledyard at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Her activities include mixed chorus, cheerleading and dramatics, in addition to her band work. Armon was chosen queen of the Elmore, Minn. JUDITH ANN SCHONEMANN
Miss Thornton

Judith Ann Schonemann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Schonemann, is the candidate of the Thornton High School band for the title of Miss North Iowa, June 11. Judith is the senior class secretary; has been a cheerleader three years; a band member six years; and is in the vocal [music] program. She is editor of the school paper; on the annual staff; active in speech; a member of boys and girls 4-H; Jr. Red Cross representative; was in junior and senior class plays; and a drum majorette. She is a Sunday School teacher at the Richland Lutheran Church where she sings in the choir and as a soloist. Judith has enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College for the fall term.
 
 
 

JOAN AEGLER
Miss Cresco

Joan Aegler, Algona's (sic) band queen, also was chosen their Homecoming Queen this year. In addition to the band program, her activities include glee club, Girls Recreation Association and student council. She has been on the staffs of the annual and school paper. Joan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Aegler of Cresco. She is in her senior year in high school. She will lead the Cresco band in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City, June 11.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

LINDA ANN BOS
Miss Charles City

Linda Ann Bos, a junior, has already had a busy high school career. Being queen is no novelty to Linda as she was the Mardi Gras Queen this year. Her activities in high school include Jr.-Sr. prom committee; Cheerleading; vocal music and dramatics. Linda is also active in Rainbow Girls where she is the Grand Cross of Colors. Her favorite sports are sailing, swimming, horseback riding and tennis. She was chosen by the band of Charles City high school to be Miss Charles City in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11.
 
 
 
 
 

MARLYS BUCHEISTER
Miss Rudd

Marlys Bucheister, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bucheister, who farm near Nora Springs, is the candidate of the Rudd band for the title of Miss North Iowa in Mason City June 11. Marlys is a senior and active outside as well as in school. She has been a 4-H member eight years and has served as president of the club ten years and as treasurer one year. Marlys is also active in St. Luke's Methodist Church where she is a member. She is vice president of the Luther League and sings in the church choir.

Miss Lone Rock

Members of the Lone Rock band have chosen Rachel McArthur, a junior, as their candidate for the title of Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Rachel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burwood McArthur who farm near Algona. In addition to playing in the band, Rachel is a majorette. Representing the Kensett band at the North Iowa Band Festival, June 11, will be Bonita Mary Gill, a senior. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Gill. Bonita has been in the band for 7 years; cheerleader for 5 years; a class officer 3 years; editor of the annual; and active in speech and dramatics. She has played softball and basketball 5 years. She is a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Manly.

Miss New Hampton

Members of the New Hampton band have elected Jane Kolthoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Kolthoff, to represent them in the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Jane's school activities include glee club, mixed chorus, marching band, Art Club, Teen-Age Drivers Club, Thespians, Girls Recreation Association, Orchesls, Student Council, Commercial Club and the annual staff. She will ride before the band in the parade and will compete for the title of Miss North Iowa.
 
 
 

SANDRA McKENNA
Miss Boone Valley

Sandra McKenna is the senior elected by the band of Boone Valley to lead the band as Miss Boone Valley in the parade at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Sandra plays the baritone horn in the band and in various small instrumental groups. She sings in the girls glee club and mixed chorus, girls trio and sextet. She has worked on the school paper and has been in all the class plays. She has been a class officer four years and an officer in FHA two years. Sandra was a candidate for Homecoming Queen last year.
 

GLADYS ELLEN PETERSEN
Miss Franklin Consolidated

Gladys Ellen Petersen, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Petersen, is the choice of the band of Franklin Consolidated School to be a candidate for Miss North Iowa in the Band Festival in Mason City June 11. In addition to her band participation Gladys has been active in vocal groups which include mixed chorus, girls chorus, mixed quartet, girls sextet and trio. She has been in dramatics and editor of the school paper as well as assistant art editor of the annual. Gladys also is very active in the church where her father is the minister.
 

ELEANOR FRANZEN
Miss Plainfield

Eleanor Franzen, candidate of the Plainfield Band for Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11, is the salutatorian of the class of 1957. She plays the trumpet in the band and works part time for a doctor. In addition to her school activities Eleanor has had a busy career as a parttime homemaker, with plenty of practice in cooking and housework, since she comes from a family of 15. She is the daughter of Mr. and Math Franzen and lives on a farm. She enjoys swimming and horseback riding.
 
 
 

CONNIE GRAHLMAN
Miss Marble Rock

Connie Grahlman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Grahlman, is the senior who will represent the Marble Rock Band at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. She was elected Miss Marble rock by the school band. Connie has played the trombone in the band four years and has participated in many other activities including basketball, softball, mixed chorus, brass quartet, pep club, glee club and Hi-Teens. NANCY ADES
Miss Blairsburg

Blairsburg band has chosen as its queen Nancy Ades, a senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ades. Nancy plays the first chair flute in the concert band and the snare drum in the marching band. She sings in the girls glee club, the mixed chorus and the church choir. Nancy has received the senior citizenship award, the homemakers award and is valedictorian of her class. Miss Granada

Granada, Minn., is making its first appearance at the North Iowa Band Festival this year. As its candidate for Miss North Iowa the band has chosen Sharon Speed, a junior. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clare Speed. Sharon sings in the chorus, is a piano accompanist, a cheerleader, class officer and class queen. She teaches Sunday School at the Methodist Church and is an officer of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She also belongs to a saddle club. Miss Emmons

Ardis Martinson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Martinson, who farm near Emmons, Minn., is the choice of the Emmons, Minn., is the choice of the Emmons band to be its candidate for the title Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City June 11. Committees Plan Big Job of Band Festival Day
It's Huge Whatever Viewpoint

Band Festival Day in Mason City is a big day - a big day for all North Iowa and Southern Minnesota. Thousands of high school musicians make Mason City their headquarters from this two state area. Thousands more spectators crowd the streets and stadium this huge spectacle.

This is the 19th running of the one day event, an event that has grown in size, talent and showmanship from year to year. From the festival's small beginning under the convention committee of the Chamber of Commerce, the event has mushroomed into a huge organization.

Hundreds Work

Hundreds of people work on the Band Festival, some the year round from one festival to the next. Many are called upon to handle the immense problem of feeding these people.

County and city officials help in handling the flow of traffic and other problems. The Mason City school system turns over its facilities for the used of visiting schools.

Many organizations besides the service clubs and retailers of Mason City are behind the project, which has grown to be one of the largest in the country.

Ray Seney is general of the entire festival this year. Working on the general and executive committee with him William L. Nichols, honorary chairman, and C.E. Blanchard, vice chairman.

Executive Staff

Others on the executive committee are F. Stanley Davis, Paul Behm, Bob Douglas, Enoch A. Morem, L. H Shepoiser, Carleton L. Stewart, John D. Vance, Bill Hines, D. C. Klempnauer and Lester Mulligan, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event.

Carleton L. Stewart is chairman of the noon luncheon for the band masters and wives and distinguished guests. Arrangements are in charge of Mr. Paul Behm, chairman, Mrs. F. Stanley Davis, Mr. J. J. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Paul V. Nissen, Mrs. Henry T. Paine, Mrs. Don Lomen, Mrs. Norman Selness and Mrs. Carleton L. Stewart.

C. W. Hamblin is chairman of seats and platforms in Central Park. David Butler and members of Toastmasters Club are MCs for park concerts. Charles Kraft is in charge of buildings and grounds, bleachers, platforms, chairs and other equipment.

Distributes Tickets

Tom Teas handles the distribution of tickets and supplies to visiting bands. Leo Risacher, chief of police, is in charge of parking and policing. Oscar Jewell and members of the 40 & 8 will handle the ushering of bands into the stadium. Paul Tantow is in charge of the tent in central park.

Ralph Geer is standby for the program in case or morning rain. John C. Berens is in charge of Boy Scouts. Bob Booe is master of ceremonies for the afternoon presentation of the queens. Ken Kew is master of ceremonies for the night finale. George Miller is in charge of the public address system.

Mrs. Fred Andresen and members of the Mason City Woman's Club are hostesses in the various school buildings.

Judges Selected

Judges to select Miss North Iowa are Grif Venz, non-voting chairman, and the presidents of the various service clubs; Rotary, Harold Johnson; Lions, Dick Romey; Exchange, Larry Frisch; Kiwanis, Irv Weiseth; vice president; and, Junior Chamber, Robert H. Betts, president elect.

Mike Zack and members of the Lions Club are in charge of moving the bands into the stadium at night.

Bob Hamilton and members of the Lions Club are ushers for the reserved seats for visiting guests at the morning parade. Fred J. Wagner and the Kiwanis Club are ushers for the general public at the night finale. Fred Hart and the Exchange Club are ushers for platform guests at night. Miss Janet Baird is in charge of First Aid.

Robert Gradin and the Jaycee members are in charge of the float and throne for Miss [North] Iowa of 1956. Tyler Stewart is in charge of the flag raising ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bailey are host and hostess for Joyce Rice and party. Arlington E. Smith and Edward O. Babcock are in charge of the walkie talkies.

Keithahm Parking

Stanley G. Reynolds is in charge of telephones and communications. Terry Lane is in charge of service trucks for visiting bands. Rollo C. Keithahn and assistants of the schools are in charge of parking band cars.

Robert Mott is in charge of electrical service; Keith Sanborn, mileage check for bandmasters; Lewis E. Snell, ambulances.

Queens hostess committee consists of Mrs. B. L. Payton, chairman, Mrs. Mel C. Paulson, co-chairman, Mrs. Art Reynolds, Mrs. W. L. Morisky, Mrs. C. F. Garland, Mrs. Paul W. Morgan, Mrs. E. J. Hermanson, Mrs. Clarence Messer, Mrs. Stanley Nelson, Mrs. F. W. Kapke, Mrs. George Atkinson and Mrs. Max Sowers.

Queens Committee

The men's committee for the queens is in charge of C. E. Blanchard, chairman, James Bradley, William J. Burger, Robert Foster, Charles Goodell, Dan G. Klempanauer, Carl Merkel, Syd T. Perry, Irvin Urdangen, Lowell M. Weir, Richard Wolf, Rex Bergo and Marcus Lundberg.

The parade committee consists of Jaycee members headed by Bill Hines, general chairman; David Hirsch, co-chairman; Dick Stoyles, floats; Gene Hulse, chairman of policing and spacing; Leonard Findling is chairman for convertibles for the queens.
