    2nd Lt. Clarence C. Schide

    Clarence C. SCHIDE, of Mason City, was a second lieutenant in the One Hundred Fourteenth Infantry, and on October 12th [1918], while in action near Bois d'Ormont leading his platoon over open ground, was severely wounded. Notwithstanding which, and while subject to heavy artillery and machine gun fire, he remained at the head of his men until he received a second [critical] wound and was taken from the field. He also earned the Distinguished Service Cross, which he afterward received.
