Cerro Gordo County Iowa
Part of the IaGenWeb Project
Spring Street over Shell Rock River, Rock Falls IA
Plans for the Rock Falls Bridge, which would carry Spring Street across the Shell Rock River, were initially drafted
in September of 1928. After revisions were made the following February, the county solicated bids. On April 28, 1929,
C. A. Holvik of Mason City was awarded the bid. The bridge was completed later in 1929 and has been in service
in an unaltered state since that time. During the 1920's concrete open spandrel arches were used for a number of
urban and small town bridges instead of riveted steel truss bridges. An open spandrel arch could achieve a relatively long
span at a reasonable cost. The Rock Falls Bridge has a deck width of 19.7 ft.; total length of 142.1 ft. and
length of the largest span is 140.1 ft.
Rock Falls Bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places June 25, 1998.
