Cemetery History Walk on Sept. 30 in Mason City

MASON CITY -- Elmwood-St. Joseph Municipal Cemetery is conducting this fall’s History Walk on Saturday, Sept. 30. There will be a late afternoon History Walk from 4:30 to 6 p.m.,, a chili supper from 6 to 7 p.m. and an Evening Stroll from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The theme is “150 Years of Serving the Community” and will portray people who were instrumental in starting and developing the Elmwood and St. Joseph cemeteries.

The cost of the entire event is $20. If purchased separately the cost is $7 for the walk, $7 for the chili supper and $7 for the stroll which includes hot chocolate after the portrayals. Tickets may be purchased on the day of the event. Advance tickets are on sale at the cemetery office. Children under 10 may attend the walk and stroll at no charge when accompanied by a parent or guardian with a ticket, but must have a ticket for the supper. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes.

The portrayals and actors for the afternoon History Walk are:

  • Irving and Jennie Card, 1834-1887, portrayed by Michael and Karen Byrne.

  • Ralph Stanbery, 1881-1957, portrayed by Chip Kinsey with wife Kathy as Jessie Stanbery.

  • Mary Knapp and Nettie Cadwell, 1845-1921 portrayed by Amber Anderson and Allison Day.

  • Carl Parker, 1873-1961, portrayed by Alan Steckman.

  • Guy Zach, 1918-1971, portrayed by Larry Day.

  • Monsignor, P. S. O’Conner, 1863-1945, portrayed by Steven Van Steenhyuse.

    The portrayals and actors for the Evening Stroll are:

  • Dan Durkin, 1879-1956, portrayed by Steve Musson.

  • Frank Sheffler told by wife , 1885-1939, portrayed by Jill Blank.

  • Benjamin Randall, 1837-1920, portrayed by Chuck Petzholdt.

  • Mrs. J. B. Doolittle 1807-1867 and son Willie, portrayed by Leigh and Holly Drzycimski.

    The event raises funds for preserving the historic aspects of the cemetery and has many local sponsors.
