Scattergood School Closes For Vacation

Commencement exercises are being held at Scattergood School today, closing the year’s work. The pupils and faculty will leave immediately for their homes and the place will be closed during the summer vacation.

This year only one graduate, Gretchen Guernsey of Pittsburg, Kansas, will receive the school’s diploma. The following program will be given at the commencement:

“Something New In Astronomy” – Gretchen Guernsey.
“Laddie” – Frances Bedell
“Militarism Thru the Eyes of Peace” – Florence Standing.
“He Called Her Girlie” – Kathryn Hampton.
Valedictory – Gretchen Guernsey.
Class Address – Robt. Balderston
Presentation of Diploma – Clarkson Moffitt

The class colors chosen by Miss Guernsey are green and gold, and her class flower is the columbine.

According to the annual custom a picnic dinner will be enjoyed at noon, many friends and relatives coming from a distance to attend the graduation ceremonies.

Of the three teachers who are here this year, it is probable that none will return next year. Winifred Edgerton will return to her home at Langhorn, PA., Harold Hoge of Whittier expects to make an eastern trip and will probably attend the State University of Iowa next year and Miriam Standing will return to her home at Earlham. The superintendent and matron, Clarkson Moffitt and his wife, will return to their home at Ackworth. Dorothy Allan will go with the Moffitt’s to Ackworth. She and Alinda Bye have been the cooks and assistant housekeepers at the school. Miss Bye will return to her home at West Branch.

With the coming of vacation the scholars will scatter to their various homes in different parts of Iowa and in other states.
