BASEBALL
(Fall)

The first week of school saw baseball practice with quite a few out for the first practice. The team was altered somewhat on account of Lloyd Hasselbusch breaking his arm in the summer. Frederick Decker took third base. Edwin Decker and Tacker took turns pitching and catching. Paul Hasselbusch and “Shrimp” Lane changed about on second base. Hartig stayed on first, and Elwood Hasselbusch held down the short stop position. Goldsmith, Kroemer, Hansen, and Stock played in field.

The first game was sort of an experiment at Stanwood under the lights. It was quite well played considering that it was the first game. The C.H.S. boys won by the score 5-1. Tacker had 11 strike outs to his favor.

The second game was played at home with the Wheatland team. Tacker favored the team with 14 strike outs but otherwise the game was poorly played. However, the Cardinals came through at the end of the game with a 2-0 victory.

The team played their third game at Durant. It was found that Durant had a much better team than was expected. Schilcting pitched for the opponents and he had a lot of stuff on the ball. On account of a bad finger Tacker was relieved in the fourth when Decker took the place on the mound. He held them the rest of the game. The final count was 5-3 in favor of the D.H.S Boys.

Then Stanwood came to the home diamond next. In a very poorly played game the locals were beaten 5-3.

Next came the great upset. The Clarence Redbirds went down to Bennett. Bennett, who had been winning all the games they played were ranked with the best teams in the county. The game was very evenly played up to the sixth inning with Bennett in the lead 4-2, when the upset occurred. The opponents pitcher “blew up” in the sixth inning. The home team collected five runs. In the seventh inning the Bennett boys made one run and the game was over. It was a very good game and the pitcher supported very nicely. Lloyd Hasselbusch played his first game since he broke his arm, he played a very good game.

For the last game of the fall season the home team played Lowden. It was a very closely contested game until the 6th inning. The score was 3-2 in our favor when a “fluky” home run was hit across the fence and was lost in the grass with one man on base. In the last inning the one run couldn’t be made by our boys. The final score was 4-3.

BOYS BASKETBALL

At the opening basketball practice of the season about twenty-five candidates appeared. It was a large group of boys to pick from. There were three veterans from last year, Bunge at center, Hasselbusch, forward, and E. Decker at guard position. The other two players were picked from, Bergman, F. Decker, Tacker, and Hartig, and thus some good substitute material was made. They boys worked hard getting in shape.

Pg 32

At the first of the season the boys did very well, but after Xmas vacation the boys fell into a slump. The first defeat came when they went to Calamus, doped as the poorest game on the part of the Redbirds. They were still in when Bennett played here and remained in until after the Stanwood game. When Mech. played here the boys began to show new life in the playing of basketball. It was at Grand Md. that they managed to crawl out of the slump in which they had been so long. When Calamus played here it was different story for our boys – they were out for revenge – and they got it. They completely outplayed the rivals throughout the whole game and it resulted in an overwhelming victory, 50-15. The next game was played at Lowden and as it was predicted it was a very close game. After being tied at the half, the home team won.

As a special game the Tipton boys played here at the same time that the Wellsburg girls played here. The boys jumped into the lead at the start and just before the gun at the half the Tipton boys tied the score at 19-all. The third quarter was very close and at the end the score was 24-19 in favor of Tipton. In the fourth quarter the rivals ran away from Clarence and won 44-29. On Feb. 13 the Redbirds met Wheatland and easily took the game. At the county tournament the boys drew the “Jinx” team, Lowden. Having beaten the eastern neighbors twice during the season perhaps our boys were over-confident. The Cardinals were beaten, 38-15. In the Sec. the boys drew Nichols, after a hard battle, the home quintet was beaten by a score of 24-20. There was not much known about this team and so it was rather hard for the boys to play against them.

Pg 33

The second team of the Cardinals had a very successful season this year. Out of 14 games, thirteen were victories. The only game that was lost was to Lowden on our home floor. An overtime was played and the Lowden team came out on the large end 15-13. The boys won the W8C trophy and deserve great praise for their fine work during the season.

The boys played the same schedule of games with the exception of West Branch, Tipton and Mechanicsville, that the first team boys did.

Each member of the second team loyally supported the first team in whatever they undertook and were always ready and willing to be substituted in case of any injury to a member of the first team.

Girls Have Successful Year !

After having had a successful year of basketball last year our girls made the name of Clarence much more known this year. Four regulars came back this year, Dorothy Kelly, Alyce Kelly, Thelma Harness, and Selma Kline. Donna Kelly, a freshman, began working her way up to the front, quickly mastering the fundamentals and the art of playing so fast that she became holder of a guard position. For the other position Irene Hein was picked and she held this very well. The team worked hard until they met Bennett on the home floor and beat them 28-16. They kept playing winning games until after Xmas, when they met Calamus. Our girls put up a great fight, without Thelma Harness, who was sick that night, but Calamus girls could not be kept down quite enough and they beat them 37-31. After this defeat the home team worked harder than ever. They knew by this time that they had great chances to go through the season playing winning ball, and their hopes were verified when they won the next five games in a row. Then came the Wellsburg sextette. This proved to be the greatest game of the regular playing season. They played fine basketball since they played “under Fire” all the game. Our girls led from the start of the game until a few minutes from the half. Then Wellsburg started to click and brought the score up to a tie 12-12 just before the gun. After the rest period the opponents started going but the red and white held them down until the third quarter when Mae Miller began hitting the basket, the final score was 33 to 16, in favor of Wellsburg.

Pg 35

At the county tournament the local teams played real ball. These games were played in a round robin series and Clarence played Springdale the first game. This was an easy game and the final score was 41-10. For the next game they played Bennett which was also an easy game. The score at the half was 44-18. In the finals the local sextette played Stanwood. This was the most exciting game of the tournament. Our girls, however, held them down to a 27-21 score.

The sectional tournament was played at Clarence, this was the first one of its kind ever staged at Clarence and it was the second kind of any tournament ever held here. Our girls played Wheatland, quite a strong team, and beat them 33-12. The second game was played against Calamus, the team who beat Clarence during the season. The girls played hard and were rewarded by a 45-22 margin. In the third game Oxford Junction was played. This was a stiff team but the Cardinals overcame them and won 34-26. In the finals Clarence played Welton. They had played them once during the season and had beaten them 34-20. This time the score was 37-23, and our girls became champions.

Since the sectional championship came to Clarence, the District was also held here. It was also played round robin fashion. Clarence beat Monona 26-20 in a tight game. The same night Waterville won over Quasqueton. The next night our girls were beaten by Quasqueton 33-23 and Waterville beat Monona. In the last, but not least, series of the game on Saturday night, the first upset of the evening occurred when Monona outplayed Quasqueton and beat them. To obtain the championship our girls had to win over Waterville by 13 points. Clarence was predicted as the under-dog. They started out by playing a fine game of ball and ended the same at the first quarter by a score of 15-1 in favor of C.H.S. and at the final gun the score board registered 43-15, a margin of twenty points. This victory by such a large margin meant not only the championship, but it also meant a trip to Des Moines to the State Tournament.

The girls left on Tuesday, March 12, for Des Moines about 10 A.M. after a rousing send-off. They arrived there about 3:20 P.M. and got their rooms at Hotel Martin. The same evening they went to a show. The next day they went sight-seeing, visiting the capital, etc. Wednesday night they went to the Drake Field House and practiced.

Pg 36

Wednesday night the whole squad went to the Coliseum, and heard Jan Garber. The next day, Thursday, they rested for the game that night. Their opponents were last years champions, Wellsburg. This was the best ball game of the entire tournament, in everyone’s opinion. After being tied throughout the whole game, Mae Miller, the all State forward, came through with the winning point. At the first quarter the score was 4-4 and at the half the score again was tied at 11-11. After the half the girls were still on even terms and at the third quarter the score stood at 13-13. With a crowd of 350 at the school house listening to the game over a special telephone wire and a crowd of 50 from Clarence seeing the game the girls played better than ever. About one minute left to go and Clarence was ahead, 15-13, Mae Miller made a sensational long shot which tied the score. With 30 seconds left to go and the score tired, Donna Kelly made a foul and Mae Miller made the basket which ended the game, a heart breaker for all. Clarence had a chance to retrieve when Mae Miller made a foul, but Harness failed to connect. Even though the girls lost the game, they enjoyed the trip very much and will long remember it.

This was the last game for the following seniors: Dorothy Kelly, Alyce Kelly, Irene Hein, Verna Mae Brink. These girls can be proud that they made a name for themselves by playing in the State Tourn.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Robert Hyde took over the Junior High Basketball team. He trained the boys for a future team. The boys didn’t have a very successful season but they improved very much. Out of the four games played they didn’t win any but received much experience. In the county tournament they drew West Branch, but they were beaten by them.

TRACK

At the beginning of the track season a group of some twenty-one candidates appeared for the sport. Kenneth Crist and Kembel, milers, both Deckers, weight events and sprinters, and R. Goldsmith, N. Goldsmith, Toerber, Ruther, Meyer, Deerburg, Bixler, Behrens, Bergman and Hartig distributed among the events. The other candidates dropped out. Robert Hyde took over the training. The first meet was held at Mechanicsville on April 13th.

Some of the teams entered in this meet were: Sabula, Lions, Mediapolis, University High, Mc Ville, St. Ambrose, Stanwood, Tipton, Clarence.

Pg 38

At the Cedar County Track Meet at Tipton 5 teams were entered. Clarence, Mc Ville, Stanwood, Springdale, Tipton. Clarence took fourth place. Nineteen ribbons were received by the local squad during the entire meet. Decker ranked high among the Clarence boys with 7 ¼ points. Decker won the only first place received by the local squad during the entire meet. Tipton received first place, McVille, second and Stanwood, third.

SPRING BASEBALL

Spring baseball didn’t get started until late because of the cold weather, but when it did start the boys practiced hard.

The first game was held at Clarence with Bennett. With Tacker on the mound Bennett only collected three hits. Clarence played errorless ball game and collected four hits, winning 3-0.

On April 16, the Clarence team played the jinx team. This proved to be a real ball game between the two rivals, and, as always, Lowden won. The Cards got one run in the fifth inning and the rivals did likewise. At the first of the seventh Lowden got another run and the home-sockers couldn’t squeeze a run in and were beaten 2-1.

On April 19, the Clarence boys went down to Stanwood and played. In the first inning the bases were loaded and so were they in the last inning but the hits just wouldn’t come. Gallmeyer got five strike outs while Tacker received six. The trouble this day was that the boys couldn’t get the hits in the pinches. Field ball was very good on this day but the batting was very poor. The final score was 2-0.

LOWDEN TAKES COUNTY TOURNAMENT

The Cedar County Tourney was held at Lowden this year with five teams entered, Stanwood, Bennett, Durant, Lowden, and Clarence. Bennett and Durant played the first game. Clarence played Lowden in the second game of the tourney. This game was really the tell-tale game of the tournament. The Cardinals started out with two runs and at the last of the fifth the score was 4-2, in favor of Cla. In the sixth Tacker began wearing out under the strain and Lowden got three hits and four runs. In the last inning each team received one run and the final score was 7-5. Lowden won 8-7.

Bennett and Lowden were stalted to fight for first place and Lowden easily won.

In the consolation round Cla. played Durant for the first game. Paul Hasselbusch pitched and did a fine job of it. There were four errors in the first inning which gave Durant 3 runs while we had 7.

For the finals in the consolation round Clarence played Stanwood whom they beat 9-2. The C.H.S. boys collected six hits and Stanwood received six. Decker was on the mound in this game. We beat them in a well-played game. Lowden took first place, Stanwood second, and Clarence first.
