ORGANIZATIONS
Past…and…Present
In the 1920’s Keno parties, bake sales, bazaars, were the way women raised money for the church. Later they had, and still continue to have, an annual market day or bake sale prior to Thanksgiving. Through such endeavors, they were able to give $900.00 toward the purchase of pews.
The Women’s St. Mary’s Guild was organized in 1949, and are still very active in the Church and Community today.
A.C.Y.O. was organized in 1940, and was active for several years. It was re-organized in 1954 with James Riedesel and Ken Colglazier as leaders.
Holy Name Society was formed in the 1940’s under the leadership of Father Frencken.
Men’s Council was formed in 1957, and is still active at this time. Their main money raising project is the annual soup supper.
POINTS OF INTEREST
St. Mary’s church, Clarence, a mission of St. Mary’s, Mechanicsville, was sold on May 28, 1935, to John C. Dettman for $410 and has since been torn down.
Nancy McAllister, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth McCluskey McAllister became a Sister of Charity and was educated in Davenport and Dubuque.
Marcella Kane joined the Sister of Humility, Ottumwa, Iowa, in the 1920’s and took the name of Sister Evangeline. She became a teacher and taught school in Iowa, Montana and California. She now resides at LeMars, Iowa.
