The Preface

This book was compiled to commemorate the 100 years the Catholic Church has served the people in the Mechanicsville area. It was difficult to obtain accurate material as to time and place but upon investigation and research, plus memories of the early members of the community, the committee tried to the best of their knowledge to present a clear and accurate account of the 100 years.

The reference material was found in the libraries of Mechanicsville, Stanwood, and Tipton, plus Cedar County Histories dated 1878 and 1910. The early history of the church was also taken in part from the History of St. John’s Church, Lisbon, because Lisbon was a mission parish of Mechanicsville at the time. Much information was also obtained from The Catholic Messenger and early residents in Cedar County living at Tipton, Clarence, Lisbon, Stanwood and Mechanicsville. The committee appreciates all contributions and help given them.
