For the moment the Schultz family has the record, 7 generations. There are undoubtedly a number of families in the county that are in the seventh generation, perhaps some that are in the eighth generation. But not all with the same family name.
According to Paul Schultz, who is the “middle” of the 7 generations, Andrew Schultz, born Jan. 6, 1807, in Lancaster county, Pa. was the first generation to come to Cedar county, arriving from Columbus in 1841. He located on 320 acres in sections 29 and 30, Center township, for which he paid $1.80 an acre.
The following year he brought his family by four covered wagons, pulled by 8 broad back brood mares. High water on the Mississippi delayed their cross by ferry until July. It was too late to plant crops. Two of the brood mares produced colts during the wait.
They brought with them a blacksmith forge and tools, iron kettle, sorghum mill, pans, a fox terrier dog, the family Bible and a yellow rose bush. Schultz says the family has the Bible, copyrighted 1837 and the descendants of the yellow rose bush.
He believes that Andrew Schultz had quite a bit to do with the founding of the Dunkard church, now called the Church of the Brethren and may have been the minister at one time.
John Schultz, born March 23, 1837, in Columbus, Ohio, came with his parents to Cedar county in 1842 and was one of the first students in the Bunker school. Farmer, blacksmith, minister, Sunday school superintendent, he lived in Cedar county from the age of 5.
John D. Schultz was born in Cedar county Nov. 22, 1864. He attended Bunker school and was a carpenter and farmer. He spent his entire life in Cedar county.
Paul Schultz was born Nov. 29, 1898. He attended Oak Hill school and has been a railroad shop mechanic, farmer, historian, publisher and author of science fiction books. He has spent most of his life in Cedar county.
David E. Schultz was born April 1, 1930 in Jones county. He attended schools in Jones and Cedar county. He served in the air force and has been a farmer, store operator, prospector, author of a book on prospecting and a welding assembler. He has spent most of his life in Cedar county.
Dennis E. Schultz was born Sept. 30, 1952 and has been a farmer, shop mechanic and lathe operator.
Anthony D. Schultz was born April 8, 1973 and he and his sister, Mindi Sue, are the seventh generation to live in Cedar county.
Since John Schultz was born before the family came to Cedar county, there may be an argument as to the seventh generation claim. However, Paul Schultz asserts only that Anthony is the seventh generation to “live” in Cedar county.
Anyone who cares to join in the discussion of generations in Cedar county is welcome.

IT IS SHULTZ, NOT SCHULTZ; THE NAME IS DUTCH, NOT GERMAN
In the story last week about the 5 generations of Shultz in Cedar county the name was spelled wrong. It is Shultz, not Schultz. Shultz is the Dutch spelling; Schultz is the German—or so Paul Shultz claims, on the best of authority.
This is one of the names we have trouble with. For example it is Schultz Bros. variety store and it is also Kenneth Schulz, in addition to the Shultz family spelling.
