J. F. McCoy of Center Point, Iowa, claims he was the first white child born in Cedar county. He writes to the Advertiser thus: “My father was the first sheriff of Cedar county, and I was the first child born in your county. If I live until Sept. 13, I will be 63 years old. I was born in Rochester, adjacent to a camp of 1,500 Indians, belonging to Blackhawk’s braves of the Sacs and Foxes and Winnebago tribes whose decendants are now found on the reservation in Tama county. If my father’s old friends, Wm. Knott and Peter Jacobs are living I would be well pleased to see them once more. I see that one J. or C. Moffet of Oakland, California, claims to be the first child born in Cedar county. I would like to know the month in 1838 he was born. My mother still lives. Her address is Robbins, Linn county.”
